A look at the Kwakiutl Indians of north Vancouver Island, prolific totem carvers. At Fort Rupert, George Hunt, in headress, carves a totem pole with an adze. He and his wife, in headband and blanket and an authority on traditional medicine and religion, perform a ritualistic dance. They are joined by other Indians in the dance which includes the use of ceremonial masks, drums, and rattles. Concert soprano and student of Indian lore, Juliette Gaultier de la Vérendrye, observes and practices the drums and chants. Mrs. Hunt is also seen making baskets, digging for clams, and gathering wild rice and carrots. Lucy Moor and her husband John Monkey arrive in a dugout canoe. The story deals with a steel worker who looses the sight of his eyes and has to accept his fate. The film shows in unique documentary pictures the work and life in the homes for the blind in Cologne, Neuwied and Düren. The Filmmuseum Muenchen has restored the only surviving tinted and toned print of the film which was found in the collection of the Finnish Film Archive.

Set in Brussels, where Suzanne Beulemans, the daughter of a rich brewer is promised to marry Séraphin Meulemeester, the son of a rival brewer. The young man and his father both seem particularly motivated by the dowry of the young fiancée. But Séraphin has a rival in Albert Delpierre, a young Frenchman who is learning brewery from Ferdinand Beulemans and who is discreetly enamoured with the young woman. Albert learns Séraphin's secret that he is having an affair with a worker and that they have had a child. He promises Séraphin that he will never reveal any of it to Suzanne, but she is told by Isabelle, her maid.
