Journalist and director Felicia Lowe’s search for the roots of her father’s family results in a warm, insightful portrait of Mainland China in 1979. Her journey takes us through the streets of Beijing where street dialogues reveal the curiosity of local people about the lives of the Chinese in America to a conversation with an English-speaking woman who, like Lowe, is a working mother, but it is the landscapes in the faces of her aunts, uncles, cousins and 85-year-old grandmother that are the greatest rewards of the voyage.

Quarup is a ritual honoring the dead. The Sete Quedas (Seven Falls) were the largest waterfalls in the world by water volume. In 1982, the violent flooding of the falls and the lands of traditional communities in the region was completed to create the reservoir of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant. In this short film, filmmaker Frederico Füllgraf captures the final days of this natural wonder of Paraná, accompanied by verses from Carlos Drummond de Andrade (written in reference to the waterfalls’ destruction) and the Avá-Guarani Quarup ritual.

The Time-Slice camera was first devised in 1980 by Tim Macmillan at Bath Academy of Art during his BA. Fine Arts degree course. Originally a painter, Macmillan was interested in combining Cubist theory with contemporary technology. Initially using hand-made photographic emulsions and photo grams, he went on to create a series of cameras creating multiple viewpoints of a space which were then collaged together. The multiple camera concept then made a lateral leap to being applied to cine film. The first camera involved a length of 16mm film negative, clear Perspex spacers providing a focal length and a strip of opaque 16mm cine magnetic tape with a pinhole drilled into each frame. A simple shutter over the magnetic tape then provided the means of exposure. The result was a tracking shot through a space. The profound revelation was that while the viewer experienced a move through space, time was frozen. A paradox!

Filmed at great personal risk, this documentary exposes the plight of "the last tribe of Israel", the Falashas of Ethiopia. They are persecuted by the Ethiopians for being Jewish and subject also to Israeli discrimination. The impoverished Falashas live in tiny, mountainous villages where the film crew found them practicing their religion in isolation, as they have done for the past 2,000 years. These Ethiopian Jews long to go to Zion, but the government will not allow them to emigrate and deals harshly with those who endeavor to escape.

Loosely based on a one-act drama by Tennessee Williams about a prostitute dying in a fleabag bordello, Hello from Bertha is played out in a Boston bedroom with spotty Southern accents and loose wigs. One of Morrisroe’s three surviving films (a fourth, centered on the murder of his cat, was censored immediately after it was shown, and has been lost) that all engage with the experimental cinematic language of their time, incorporating elements of horror cinema, a punk ethos, and the outrageousness of artists like Jack Smith, Kenneth Anger, and John Waters.
