Eric Temple is a composer whose rival, both in romance and work, is Sir Geoffrey Pomfret , a nobleman with few scruples. The woman they both love is Margaret, the daughter of Lord Neville. To get rid of his competition, Pomfret tells Lord Neville that his wife, Lady Neville, is in love with Eric. Then, when Eric is attacked by thugs and lays unconscious in a hospital, he steals his opera too.
Bloomer, a cadet at a Military Academy, almost disrupts the morning drill, when he rushes through the lines exclaiming, "Look at the balloon!" While the men are in derision for his action, a hazing is planned for Bloomer. He is quickly tied up in a bag and he first experiences a rough ride in a wheelbarrow, after which he is dumped into a bay-mound. He is next suspended in midair at the end of a rope, where he is left to dangle until he is released by his superior officers. After many such painful subjections, he is finally given a note to deliver to the landlady, which upon reading, she begets herself into such a passion that before Bloomer leaves the room, he is a sorrowful looking spectacle.

Sofie Clutts, the belle of Lizardville, returns from her visit to the East, and the men clamor to see her. Alkali Ike is robbed of his suspenders, his hat and coat, so that three of the men could look presentable. Sofie tries to entertain her three suitors, one in the parlor, another in the dining room, and the last in the kitchen. Alkali Ike calls to see the fair Sofie, and is shoved by suitor number one from the parlor into the dining room, his next trip from the dining room into the kitchen, and the last trip, the one that hurt the most, was from the kitchen through the window into some shrubbery.

She does not eat with him, perhaps reflecting her occupation as a cook who doesn't eat with who employs her.

Charles Servaes finds a coin on the ground and takes possession. When he tries to use it to pay for his cab ride, the cabbie says it's counterfeit. Sorry! I've nothing else, being a comic slapstick bum, indicates Servaes, and goes on his way to not pay a succession of people.
Max is in love with a charming girl, who also is already affianced to another. Does Max despair? Never. The debonair gentleman sets his wits to work to frustrate his rival's little game, and though he meets with several rebuffs in the end he is successful. Even then the rival, on the eve of his wedding, tries to turn the tables on Max, and very nearly succeeds, but with the little lady's help Max finally wins. The story is full of quaint and whimsical humour, which culminates in some exceedingly funny scenes before a mirror, in which Max sees strange visions.

Following the trend of all world production, this was another film based on a true crime chronicle, based on the murder of industrialist Adolfo Freire by gardener Augusto Henriques, which took place in Rio de Janeiro. No copy of Um Crime Sensacional survives, only 1 image from the film is known, which was placed in the magazine "Cinemin". It is not known whether the film was a "sound" film, that is, with actors dubbing themselves live behind the screen based on already recorded images. The only proof that the film could be a sound film is a 1913 song called "O Crime de Paula Matos" by Joaquim Pacheco, which may have been used in the sound versions of the film. This song is currently lost.
Eugen Hamann, a student, finds employment as a tutor for Alice, a pastor’s daughter. Before long, warm feelings arise between the two. While taking a walk in the forest, they happen to come across one of Eugen’s acquaintances, the beautiful noblewoman Miss LeBlanc. Eugen is hit hard by Cupid’s arrow and forgets all about Alice, whose heart breaks into a thousand pieces. Eugen leaves his position as tutor unaware that in doing so, he is also leaving his unborn child behind. Alice clandestinely gives birth to a small child with a large birthmark on its forehead. She writes to Eugen in the hope of financial support, but he refuses, and when no help is forthcoming from her parents either, she reluctantly hands the child over to an orphanage. Ernest Bourbon discovers that a shower of gold coins fall from his donkey's hindquarters -- I've phrased that as politely as I can. Now rich, he moves to the city, dresses well and hires servants. Unlike the one about the goose that lays the golden eggs, he treats his benefactor well, even though the donkey doesn't seem to enjoy the process.
At the express wish of her father, Lucy Martin marries Leo Noakes, a stingy man and one twice her age. When they are at church one Sunday a fire breaks out and everybody manages to escape with the exception of Lucy, her husband and her former sweetheart, Walter. While Noakes sinks tremblingly upon the floor, Walter seizes Lucy and brings her to safety. Regardless of his many burns, he dashes back into the roaring flames and drags out old Noakes, But upon investigation it is discovered that he is dead. Even though he had been cruel and harsh to her, Lucy bewails his loss. Some time after the obsequies Lucy succumbs to the wooing of her former sweetheart.

The young artist Simon Durand happens to find himself in an idyllic village. Here he finds board and lodging with Marietta, who lives alone with her sick mother, and soon Durand has won the heart of his young hostess. Their happy state is threatened by the wealthy farmer Jerome, who has been courting Marietta in vain for a long time and is not about to abandon his hopes of eventually marrying her. He tattles on the couple to Marietta’s mother, who immediately suffers a heart attack and dies at the mere thought of a poor painter as her son-in-law. One day she runs away and is lost in the woods. Shep, her faithful pet, follows and finds her unable to get up, as she has sprained her ankle. He hurries home, and although he barks loudly, no one heeds him, for all are out searching for the lost child. He manages to get into the harness of his little cart and drags it out to the child. She lifts herself into it and Shep takes her home.

Lee Clay is convicted by the jury and sent to prison for ten years. Tom, the son, swears revenge and determines to kill his brother-in-law for testifying against his father. Helen, the wife of Tom, goes to warn her brother. In trying to save him from her now maddened husband, she is killed. Clay and his brother-in-law end the feud over the lifeless form of Helen.
