Cinematic Era: 1913 Vintage

Jim Hendricks receives a letter from his daughter in the east stating that she is on her way and will arrive with her little girl that day. The stagecoach carrying her from the railroad station, some miles from her father's home, meets with an accident. While repairing the vehicle of ancient times, Bessie Hendricks' young daughter, canters off into the woods in search of wild flowers. Bessie runs after her. Having captured the young rascal and returning to the road Bessie discovers the coach has gone on its journey.

As Smith is walking near a gypsy camp, he sees Lola, a young gypsy woman, having trouble leading her horse across a stream. He helps her, and the two of them soon begin a romance. Despite being warned, Lola leaves the camp and elopes with Smith. But it isn't long before she realizes that she may have made a mistake.

This picturesque travelogue takes in the varied sights and delights of the Teesdale market town and surrounding area. Tranquil scenes of River Greta bridges, enigmatic ruins - including Egglestone Abbey and Barnard Castle's round tower - are tempered with street scenes around the handsome market place and The Bank.

The daughter of the captain of a trading ship finds out that the ship is in danger of sinking and tries to save it and the crew.

Young Dick and Milly are married but struggling, especially when Dick loses his position on a labor gang. Milly returns to her father who refuses to take Dick in as well. He wanders disconsolately in a park where he finds a kitten. Wanting to give it to Milly as a gift he follows it to the courtyard of a mansion. The young boy who lives there accidentally injures Dick, when he is carried into the house the boy's mother, touched by his Dick’s story, cares for him and sends for Milly. When he is all well again, she gives him a position in her household as a chauffeur and the young couple reunite.

Charles Servaes decides it's time to get out of the city, so he ties an abandoned bath tub to a truck and lets it tow him to the seaside. Once there, he spends his time talking to the camera with a self-satisfied smirk and annoying the people around him until the police carry him and his bath tub to the pokey.

At the time the play opens the .Southern army is harassing the Unionists. The Northern spy force is augmented and Grace, whose brother, Harry, is already in the secret service, joins it. She meets Harry and together they take a coach to the Southern town they have selected to spy upon. A prominent colonel in the Southern army deals with dispatches, and it is this man that Grace investigates while Harry awaits events. The colonel has a sweetheart, May, and Grace manages to got an introduction to her at a ball by purposely tearing her dress and appealing to May for help. This leads to an acquaintance with the Colonel, and she practices all her woman's wiles and fascinations upon him and he is impressed with her.

This film moves mostly in the surroundings around the Royal Palace and Strandvägen. The environments are strangely similar compared to how it looks today. The camera is initially placed on Lejonbacken by the castle. It pans to the right over the distinguished Hotell Rydberg and the Royal Opera House. The strolls along Strandvägen are many and the cars few. People stop and contemplate the strange novelty that a man with a movie camera still is. Strömkajen's white archipelago boats in front of the Grand Hotel stand in stark contrast to the toil of the coal carriers at the barges along Strandvägen.

In this one, Max is engaged to a girl -- called, as in all his shorts, 'Jane' -- and she loves her pussycat. She loves the lazy, immobile lump of fur in a way that only cat lovers can, and which is a mystery to us normal people. She pets it, she croons to it, she makes it play the piano --- 'presumably "Kitten on the Keys" and Max just hates it. Max is all reaction takes in this one and up to his usual standards, including one great gag to round off the picture.

The usurer Sintram lives and breathes for money and, for this very reason; he disinherits his charitable son Floridan. Embittered, Sintram buries his fortune in the forest and hides a will in a beech tree, with his estate left to anyone who finds it. This act is the only hard physical work the old usurer has done in his life and, ironically, the exhaustion kills him. Meanwhile, Floridan has been employed at a sawmill when he receives the news of his father’s death and his own disinheritance. During the Balkan Wars in 1912 and 1913, military hospitals for wounded soldiers were opened in all bigger towns in Serbia. Most hospitals were in Belgrade where several thousand wounded soldiers were treated. The last XXXIV emergency hospital was located in a onetime tavern Smutnikovac at the Topcider hill. The owner of the private hospital was the industrialist, banker and philanthropist Djordje Vajfert and it was run by his nephew, the lawyer and industrialist Ferdinand Gramberg.

A casket is carried outside. The men’s choir and the harmony singers walk along in the funeral procession. Finally there is the arrival at the Kapperlaan, and the leaving for the cemetery. We mainly see images of the funeral procession: many men pass before the camera, most of them clergy; Cardinal van Rossum also appears in the picture. We also see images of the casket.

Charles Raleigh is a cousin of Miss Clara Burton, and is secretly in love with her. She returns his affection in secret also. Time parses and George Conway makes love to Clara. She considers his proposal of marriage long and seriously and makes entry of it in her diary. About this time Charles is called to America to look after his mining interests. He arrives in time to find himself a pauper as the result of a terrific conflagration that has swept his property. He decides to make a new start, but finds the battle difficult.

Fred Evans, aka Pimple, plays Napoleon in the famous scenes from his life - including crossing the (cardboard) Alps - on a pantomime horse - the attempt on his life - by suffragettes - on the way to Paris (via Waterloo station) and the noble General's taking the watch from the sleeping sentry (who of course thinks he is trying to nick his rifle). At the battle, Napoleon (Fred Evans) and Wellington (Joe Evans) toss a coin for the first shot. The French, realising they have forgotten the ammunition, go off to the shops to buy some more. A troop of Boy Scouts charge Napoleon, who, after a chaotic battle, surrenders. He is taken prisoner and sent off in a boat, saying goodbye to France forever (here represented by a cardboard notice saying France on one bank of the Thames). -Bryony Dixon- BFI

If you were a studious man, accustomed to burning the midnight oil, wouldn't it annoy you if each night at 12 precisely, the ghost of a melancholy maiden appeared, weeping and lamenting? A certain professor was bothered this way. He was not afraid of ghosts and could have endured one whose specialty was silent haunting. He found, however, that the weeping maiden was a nuisance, and prevented him from concentrating. So he decided, ungallant though his conduct might be deemed, to get rid of her.

Hoping to please her, some children give their grandmother an electric lamp for her birthday, but the elderly lady does not intend to put the old oil lamp in the attic and tells the young people that the object has a huge value for her.

Tired of his secretaries getting married and leaving, a businessman puts out a want-ad with a unique stipulation.

During the Civil War there were two sisters living in Virginia, who had as a near neighbor a young, wealthy and patriotic man, who visited them frequently. The elder sister was plain and attractive, but possessing a patriotic spirit and sterling qualities. The younger sister was pretty and doll-like, superficial, frivolous and fond of luxury. The elder sister was capable of a deep and undying devotion, while the younger was only capable of shallow affection. Both of the sisters love the neighbor in their separate ways. He is sub-consciously attracted by the inner worth of the elder sister, but this attraction is overbalanced by the beauty of the younger.
