The title of the film - Patina - suggests many meanings around the phenomenon of "surface" that function in this hand painted film. Taking footage from a distant past and reworking it through paint and montage, creating veils thorough which only glimpses of the photographed images can be seen - becomes not a metaphor for but a visceral expression of the effects of time. The goal of the work is not to be excessively "poignant" or "nostalgic" about the past but rather to celebrate the vibrancy of seeing (and painting) it anew. The process of transforming photography into paint is particularly significant for me as I have been painting on paper and canvas for the past several years and this is my first completed film from this period. - Peter Herwitz

He opened a cinema there, the first in the city with a chic look. More followed, built in the gaudy, eclectic 'Tuschinski style', with Theater Tuschinski in Amsterdam as the jewel in the crown of the film king of the Netherlands. Director Ger Poppelaars places the life story of the perfectionist showman Tuschinski in his time. He reconstructs the successful total performances in the cinema with acts and orchestra, everything taken care of down to the last detail.

The number in the title of this work, 15.000.000 Parachutes, refers to the population of Jakarta, Indonesia. It was estimated that around sixty percent of the 15.000.000 inhabitants were unemployed at the time of filming. Diaz Morales’s video is an allegory, telling the story of one man, a ‘parachutist’, as a metaphor for the plight of those unemployed. The cyclical structure of the narrative mirrors the cyclical life of an anonymous would-be worker. Each morning, the voiceover tells us, the parachutist wakes up, finds the taps at his sink do not work so washes his face in bath water and summons the courage to ‘attempt another jump’. These jumps are made from the national monument of Jakarta, Monas, an obelisk topped with a gold flame, which was built in the 1960s and 70s to symbolize Indonesia’s independence.
