Balázs is a gypsy boy. At the end of the 1930s, in the Bakony, in a tiny village called Taliándörögd, a plane lands on the ground. The children run out, amazed. Balázs is there. That's when he decides to take a good look at this plane, so that he can make it later in a barn, secretly, from scratch. He lives in a gypsy community, different from the others. He and the butler fly for the joy of flying, for the wonder of it. This film is a reworking of an old and true story, which they try to follow in Budapest in the present. It's about exclusion, about being on the outside, about freedom and how much it can happen in this world.

Tsukiji is a “city symphony” film of sorts, dedicated to the largest fish-market in the world, and one of the last surviving proletarian spaces in Tokyo. A film about cutting in a double sense, it harkens back to a moment of intersection of modernism and social realism, evoking the ghost of the left-wing Japanese novelist of the 1920s and 30s, Takiji Kobayashi, author of Kani kosen (The Factory Ship) and an early victim of Japanese fascism. —Allan Sekula

"Pulsar" belongs to "The Angel Cycle" ("Le Cycle de l´Ange"). In this cycle of works we create bonds between the human body and astronomical bodies. Maria Klonaris´ improvised performance is a negative dance which lies between pleasure and catastrophe, a black and blue body language which grapples with the white of the screen and the luminous suddenness of a firework display.

An homage to the majestic effects of light projected through celluloid. Luminous captures the projected image in its altered form; reflecting back into the projection booth, after passing through the glass and onto the screen, bleeding, breaking and flickering on the surfaces of spinning reels, old posters and the machinery itself.

Often the images are held for awhile and then left to themselves - only to fade out just as they begin to move. For me this enhances the feeling of memory - and the sensation that when you leave a place you know that everything is still there, without you. And so the film is both elongated and fragmented.

In 1966 a few eccentric Berkeley college students got together to recreate the last tournament of the Golden Age of Chivalry. Today their legacy lives on in an international organization known as the Society for Creative Anachronism where lords and ladies, knights and artisans create an intricate subculture that even pervades the participants' real lives. Honor and chivalry are the words of the day, but each member struggles to find their own meaning and way amidst the social dynamics that are inherent in any large group. "In Service to the Dream" chronicles a 9-month span in the lives of the populace of the kingdom of Caid, where kings and queens rise and fall, but thousands of people all seem to march to the beats of similar drums.

If a single word could sum up the free-wheeling flavour of alternative music and comedy in Aotearoa during the 1970s, that word would surely be ... Blerta. The 'Bruno Lawrence Electric Revelation and Travelling Apparition' included foundation members of the NZ screen industry (Lawrence, Geoff Murphy, Alun Bollinger) plus other merry pranksters. Drawing on the Blerta TV series and beyond, Blerta Revisited (aka Blerta - The Return Trip) is an anarchic collection of comedy skits, musical interludes and films culled from the Blerta archives.

A small moment from a children's Halloween party is taken as material for an exploration of folded time. Time is, in fact, what I see as my main material. THE BACK STEPS is a demonstration of that particular interests. The image loops but also progresses forward. That is fairly easy to see. However, the sound, while having looping elements, has a compositional structure that changes throughout the piece. I imagine most pieces as a series of overlain arcs, each of a different length and height and each representing a different durational element in the piece. Another way to imagine this is to think of a mechanical clock with many different internal rhythms, all of which move the hands steadily forward.

This is the story of Terenti, a reindeer hunter and chief of the brigade, and his family. His wife Maïa, daughter Anna, brother Vassia, and grandfather live in their balok. Anna’s cousin Konstantin is staying with them in the tundra. Early one morning, Anna awakens. The Trace of Moloktchon follows a family of Dolgans from sunrise to sunset. We meet the Tundra of Siberia, the last nomadic inhabitants of the Taïmyr. On May 9, 2000, the filmmaker set a camera inside a balok and another outside on a swivel to follow the sun. This allowed him to film on two screens, an intimate record of Maïa’s daily life and the means developed by this thousand-year-old culture for meeting its needs. At the same time, he captured a panorama of her environment, the Tundra of Terenti. We discover the way of life of these animistic nomads. They went about their usual activities without apparent regard for the camera. The resulting document is moving and informative.

A chemical Western in 16mm whose primitive processes reveal a profound instability of language within desert landscapes. Made through the hand processing and primitive contact printing of outdated laboratory print stock, The Silver Returns examines the phenomena of "letter mountains" that proliferate the old mining towns of the American Southwest. Much of the silver mined here, became the image-bearing material of photographic film. The silver returns to find the instability of the film's emulsion mirroring the desert's toxic environmental remains.

A philosophical dream narrative, structured around conceptions and representations of the reversibility and irreversibility of time and desire. The title is more or less exact. Several layers of Freudian fun, from exploding/imploding houses, to collapsing walls that re-erect themselves, to the dead Lenin, lying for his film portrait. As a Lacanian once said: he does not have the phallus: he is the phallus. Historical psychological fun for the whole family. “Everyone over ninety in the company of both parents admitted free.” (UbuWeb)

This hand-painted work presents the semblance of a dark brown wall, ripped open and pocked with yellowed visions of rooms and other interiors, gradually (and always occasionally) intersperced with multiply colored holes, revealing exteriors beyond the shifting facades of the "wall". The openings into and through the wall become larger, and then become smaller again (so small as to seem semblances of stars at times). Finally the enlargements take over the scene and eventually demolish all sense of "wall". This film is very inspired by the paintings of Gunther Forg, and with respect to St. John of the Cross, is a hand painted envisionment of holy depression.

On the island Tiengemeten, thirteen miles south of Rotterdam as the crow flies, all roads come to a dead end. Behind the dykes is water and wilderness. Here, among these dykes on 1700 acres of fertile land, director Digna Sinke filmed from 1996 how Tiengemeten is intended to become a stretch of wild nature, as part of a conservation plan. This is easier said than done. Alternative land with living accommodations has to be provided for six farming families. This comes through for five, but not for Leen Vos. Sinke also filmed how project groups regularly come and take a look and call meetings. Tiengemeten will be divided into three sections: Wistfulness, Wilderness and Wealth. However, nobody knows how the plan will work out. The negotiators allow farmer Leen Vos to stay until 2007. Until that time, the project cannot be carried out. Sinke just keeps filming, in her restrained, observant style, devoted to the magnificent scenery.

Life on the streets of New York City for the poor and homeless is an unforgiving struggle. For those who also battle mental illness, it is marked by the additional pressures of fear, isolation and misunderstanding. "West 47th Street," a remarkable new film, takes its cameras into the heart of the struggle as it rejects the invisibility of the mentally ill who inhabit America's urban streets. Filmed over three years at Fountain House, a renowned 50-year-old rehabilitation center in New York, West 47th Street reveals the human face of mental illness — and the faith and courage with which its victims fight to recover control of their lives.

CREPESCULE POND AND CHAIR is a little elegy song, simultaneously celebrating a life and mourning a family's personal loss. Disabled by muscular dystrophy, Sandra Davis' brother used a wheelchair for most of his life. Despite the long, gradual degeneration of his physical condition, he lived with great spirit and heart, married, raised two children, volunteered for his church, and was still working at his profession and building a fish pond on his land, when he died suddenly of complications of MD at age 52. When the filmmaker herself was disabled in an auto accident, his attitude of practical adaptations to physical impairments was one that made it easier for her. In an irony of life, a little Christmas message from him arrived two days after his sudden death. This event impelled Davis to respond with a film. The chair was his mobility in life; the pond he created was his dream.
