The memory of a tragedy of passion – a double murder that took place in a shepherd’s village 50 years ago – is preserved in the form of a ballad. The villagers recall the events and the musicians talk about the birth of this song that lacks the victim’s point of view, because the assassin is the one who commissioned them to compose this ballad.

However Tess is reluctant to go: she fears the stormy waters and would rather stay at home for the summer with her best friend, Candice. Tess does go, and with her goes Maa-mou the cat, a parting gift from Candice, as her lively companion. Together they rise to the challenges of life on a fishing boat, and thrill in the summer's unexpected pleasures.

‘If a sense of reality exists, a sense of possibility must also exist’ is an adaptation of the theatrical play ‘The Enthusiasts’ by Robert Musil. Franciska Lambrechts has managed to turn this ‘unstageable’ piece into an intriguing film by radicalizing Musil’s work. In close consultation with the actors (from theatre companies including tg. Stan and Dito’Dito), she reduced the text to its core: the quest of a small group of people for truth and reality at a time when major ideologies fail. It has become a refined film with strictly framed black-and-white images and passionate acting.

Klahr describes it as “a psychedelic melodrama” offering “my most linear story line yet.” It’s constructed from cutouts of characters and spaces he photographed himself; the actors move in a jumpy manner to the accompaniment of their own dialogue. The main character, a young man named Rex, searches for “this place…that he always knew was his future,” in the words of a woman who becomes his girlfriend. Inspired by “a 12th-century Jewish mystic…who became enlightened by meditating on Hebrew letters,” Rex figures he can “update this approach” by meditating on TV through “nonstop channel flipping.” Out of money and facing eviction, he moves in with the woman, who supports his quest. They take a new hallucinogen together, and Rex becomes an apparent zombie, living in “the place” but incapable of communication or action.

It is a masterpiece of Cusco's popular creativity, where the saints come to life. The Corpus Christi celebration in June is a solstice festival, coinciding with a ceremonial time in the Andes. Just as in the Inca past the ancient mummies were carried in procession, today the images of saints and virgins serve as emblems of current social groups.

A still life featuring a large fish, painted in the Dutch manner, The Ray immerses us in the quiet life of familiar objects that the artist took pleasure in depicting. The careful search for the exact placement of each kitchen utensil and each piece of fruit was a long and meticulous process through which Chardin gave his work symbolic or historical meaning.

The turning point is in between the surrealism and the magic reality: The Tropical Couple. They were a young couple and the time to discover and surprise each other had past. The time had come to share fears and solitude too. The neighbors make love and watch pornos. It’s Sunday and it’s very hot. She and he are not even angry at each other anymore. Their fantasies are running out of a lot of loneliness. She is the woman and He is the man. She is flesh & spirit. He is spirit & flesh. The fridge is broken, the food is rotting. ‘Look at me I’m naked and waiting for you inside the fridge. I’m your little Mama, your domadora, what ever you want’. The song keeps playing on the recorder and the refrigerator still is broken. ‘I beat you but I love you. Maybe the neighbor will see us while we make love watching porno. Why do we always find each other in the neighbor’s window?

Daverio’s works, whether it is sculptures, paintings or jewellery, need, to bee understood and appreciated, not the translator’s rhetoric, but the silence of the naturalist who, with love, listens to the song of birds which would fly away at the merest rustling. Daverio’s primitive figures, who appear to be playful, personify the conundrums, doubts, and anguish of the modern world.

The film runs like the scenery seen from the train. The images flow, then stop, it starts moving again. A man and a woman meet. Colorful carp swimming gracefully. A view of castle walls with perforations. A miscellaneous and elusive image thread the screen. The image gave up movement and eventually began to dissolve... A work that I rediscovered projecting film.

Caught in the Crossfire is an in-depth and moving look at how Canadian soldiers keep peace in wartorn former Yugoslavia. Seen through the soldiers' eyes, it pays tribute to a community of men and women who have earned the respect of all sides in a bloody dispute. Throughout the film, we gain an awareness of the difficult work of our peacekeepers and of the successes that have resulted from our Canadian policy of refusing to take sides in the conflict.

In defiance of the background noise of homophobia, a series of dreamlike images evoke the interplay between private and public spaces, and the continual disintegration and reconfiguration of queer identity within (and on the periphery of) dominant culture. The soundtrack combines a litany of voices from a radio talk-show which fade in and out of background electronic noise, processed underwater sound effects, and a poetic text. The images represent a movement from the interior space of dreams through intimate private domestic scenes, out into the public urban spaces of subway stations and street intersections, and finally to the city skyline as seen from across the surface of a body of water.

The S/N installation/performance project began in 1992, took its title from the “signal/noise ratio” of electronic communications and applied it to the dissonance surrounding contemporary social issues — sex inequality, racial and ethnic minority discrimination, politics of gender, HIV/AIDS and sexualities — in an effort to go beyond the theatrics of art toward activist engagement and community outreach. The conceptual author, director and performer of the work, Teiji Furuhashi, who came out on stage as gay and HIV-positive and died of AIDS-related septicemia on 29 October 1995, characterized S/N as “struggle.”

In a marriage agency, a young woman watches VHS tapes of men from Western countries looking for a wife and then proceeds to film a tape that represents her. The owner, and by the way the only employee of the makeshift agency, who boasts of many successful intermediations (portraits of married women in Western metropolises wallpaper the agency's walls), selects the settings and teaches the young woman how to pose: from behind a desk, as a secretary, with the phone to her ear, with the image of American skyscrapers in the background, against the backdrop of a beach with palm trees, in a mini dress in a Mediterranean setting, with a glass of red wine in her hand, etc. But at a certain point the young woman rejects the clichés and asks the owner-cameraman to capture her in an authentic pose.
