Sometimes the camera films of its own volition. Macumba shows an optical tangle in 13 scenes. As a start signal one hears a double hammer blow arising from a black screen, a sound like the nailing shut of a coffin. Macumba develops slowly out of the black. A black porno couple on the telephone in London. Then they meet on a snake in a park and are, together with Kalahari Bushmen mixed to a film matrix which is as incomprehensible as real life.

Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan is the setting for "The Legends of Tono," a unique collection of regional folktales, gathered in the early 20th century by Yanagita Kunio. The tales manifest and explain invisible forces and malevolent events which shape the psycho-cultural dimensions of Japanese indigenous beliefs and folk faith. Inspired by "The Legends of Tono," HORSE/KAPPA/HOUSE records the surrounding landscape in a number of small villages throughout Iwate Prefecture in order to create a cinematic space which echoes, by implication and association, the external and unseen world in the environment.

Cleverly conceived and artfully edited, Christian Marclay's 7 1/2-minute video, Telephones, comprises a succession of brief film clips that creates a humorous narrative of its own in which the characters, in progression, dial, hear the phone ring, pick it up, converse, react, say goodbye and hang up. In doing so, they express a multitude of emotions--surprise, desire, anger, disbelief, excitement, boredom--ultimately leaving the impression that they are all part of one big conversation.

The story centers on a devout Muslim, Faco, who tries to run his two-wife household in the traditional way. The trouble begins when his ambitious younger son, Kalifa lapses and gets involved with his older brother's hoodlum friends. Kalifa then gives them his money and soon loses his job. The city has a curfew at night and only those with a highly-prized identity card are allowed out. Police rigorously patrol the streets in search of whores and people without cards. One homeless, unemployed man, Oussou, decides to earn the card by becoming a stoolie for the cops, and snitches on Kalifa's older brother, precipitating a police raid of Faco's home that results in their finding a cache of illegal drugs. Faco and the older son are both stripped naked and thrown in jail. Suddenly Faco finds himself brutalized and humiliated by his Muslim brothers. Meanwhile, the dark-skinned daughter of a white storekeeper, with a lust for black hookers, sets off to find her real mother.

It shares similarities, both in editing style and visual content, with certain films of the so-called American underground, Western European auteurs and various East European New Waves, although Pašportrets lacked their access to audiences. Narrowly escaping confiscation by the Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti (KGB) shortly after its completion, Pašportrets remained hidden until 1994–1995, when it was restored and premiered at Anthology Film Archives in New York City.

They take turns pedalling their bicycles and arrive at the seaside town Yumi has chosen as her destination. It turns out to be the town where her father lives with his mistress... Yumi confronts the problems she had not solved by passing through the gate that Hana pulled her through. Hana is touched by Yumi's strength and becomes stronger herself. The film dramatically depicts the girls growing up separately in the same time.

The film intertwines two stories: that of Hermes, a man who claims to love boys, and the filmmaker’s own exploration of desire. Hermes, a self-proclaimed pederast, shares his experiences and reflections in a video verite interview, expressing his desire to connect with boys before puberty and his struggle with societal judgment. His narration, voiced by an actor for anonymity, covers themes of self-justification, guilt, and childhood memories. The filmmaker’s questions about desire create a mirror effect, highlighting the adult’s longing to be the child they once were. Hermes also recounts the loss of his younger brothers, taken away due to fears of them becoming gay, hinting at a past sexual encounter with them.
