As distinct fishing societies of great spiritual, cultural, and economic wealth, Indigenous peoples have always respected the resources of their rivers and oceans. But within their own lifetime, they have watched governments “manage” the fishery into a state of crisis. Filmmaker Barb Cranmer, a member of the ‘Na̱mǥis First Nation, explores the rich fishing traditions of the Sto:lo, Heiltsuk, and ‘Na̱mǥis peoples of Canada’s West Coast in Ƚaxwesa Wa—Strength of the River. With over fifteen years’ experience fishing Johnstone Strait with her father, Cranmer presents rarely heard stories of traditional fishing practices and documents Indigenous peoples’ efforts to build a sustainable fishery for the future.

There is a constant tension between the forces of an ever-changing economy and the need to have stable communities. As technologies change, workers can lose their jobs and whole communities can be capsized. Beyond Measure looks at thousands of coal miners who are losing their jobs as newer and bigger machine moves through the coalfields. The film places the present challenges in a larger historical context and documents efforts of citizens to rebuild their communities, highlighting the beauty and challenges of living in the mountains through people's descriptions of their daily lives in their own voices. They describe how the mutual aid and support of extended families and attachments to the land are more important than the things economists usually measure, prompting questions about the true costs of economic and technological change.

The history of agriculture must have begun 10,000 years ago with hemp, also known by its Latin name cannabis. This assumption scientists conclude from finds made in the territory of modern China. In a way, hemp has also helped write the history of mankind, in religions, wars and revolutions the plant has never been absent. This film gives an interesting insight into the tradition, cultivation and processing of this universally usable plant.

The dying Jewish community of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, so small it can't always raise a minyan (the required quorum of ten men for prayer services) is profiled, warts and all, in this fascinating time capsule. Their children have left for Montreal, Toronto and Halifax and now only the older people remain keeping the spark of Jewishness alive. Their attitudes, including not allowing women into the minyan, and their feelings about the imminent demise of their community, contribute to a poignant portrait of a Jewish world that will soon exist only in memory.

With her green bow in her hair, a naïve Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz embodies an aspect of the artist’s own personal context. She is dreaming about going beyond the confines of her urban surroundings, amongst thousands of flickering windows in apartment blocks, to travel somewhere over the rainbow. As she stumbles upon her yellow brick road, a bedside telephone, her communications take her far far away, becoming entangled in her obsession with connecting to this far away place. Swept into a cyclone of dizzying imagery, she becomes somewhat more realized, sceptical about who she is and her dreams. Much like the ubiquity of television, her dreams are nothing more than commodified imagination that has nonetheless shaped her life. In this fairy-tale land, she desperately tries to find her way back home.

How far would you go to find your missing son? One widowed father finds out that answer when his son suddenly disappears while playing in the backyard. The boy's abduction is linked to the mysterious disappearances of the Anasazi Indian tribe, more than 70 years ago. Jim Cole's (Derrik Woodbury) search is aided by his former high school sweetheart Meg (Nicola McGillicuddy) and an ancient map of Indian petroglyphs. The couple are prepared for their jopurney by a Native American woman (Linda Ianella ) who knows of the Anasazi, and perhaps why Jim's son was taken. Following the map in the scenic Castle Rock area of southern Utah, they discover a sacred stone arch, recently revealed after a long drought. With time running out, Jim and Meg face a climactic showdown in the battle to rescue his young son.

In the annals of crime, perhaps no name evokes terror more than that Jack the Ripper. Although this anonymous killer committed his gruesome murders more than a century ago, his name lives on. This program goes to England to investigate the murder of five women, which took place in 1888 and have gripped the collective psyche ever since. Most frightening of all is the fact that murderer was never caught, or even identified. Criminologists present their theories on the identity of the infamous killer. Never-before-released photographs graphically display the vicious work of Jack the Ripper's knife

I want to help, I want to be saved, I want to help. One day during summer holiday, best friends Nemoto and Maruyama are walking along a mountain path when suddenly a gunshot rings out and Nemoto falls. Maruyama barely manages to hide behind a roadside block, but Nemoto is seriously injured and unable to move. At first Maruyama tries to help, but the persistent and invisible killer frightens him and he is unable to do anything about it. Root begins to blame him, and says that the killer is after you and that he is involved. Time ticks by as the truth remains elusive... The film depicts the human psyche, where friendship and conscience disappear and only egoism emerges as a result of the absurd horror, set only on an ordinary country road. A film that tackles drama head-on, in a world where many films are bland.
