A shelter from the cold. A safe place for children. Somewhere to meet at any hour. A cheap place to eat. A neighborhood landmark. Located on the corner of a major intersection in an established neighborhood, this Louisville White Castle restaurant meant a lot of things to a lot of people. For thirty two years. So when residents learned that White Castle #12 was to close its doors forever due to a rent dispute, there was a huge public reaction. Some were angry and frustrated, others were nostalgic. Many came out for one final cheeseburger or cup of coffee. A few held a candlelight vigil, others a birthday party. There were television and radio interviews, rap songs, stories, chess games and guys with paper bags over their heads. Whatever the gesture, thousands came out into the cold on December 21, 1988 for one simple reason - to bid an old and faithful friend farewell.

A pedagogical and manifesto-like work based on documentation of the artist's Crawl series. In these performances, which he began in 1978, he inched along city streets, embodying different characters—an office worker, Superman—laid low on the ground. Through this horizontal position, he highlighted both the hypervisibility and the degradation of the Black male body, a figure that remains abject and precarious in a racist America.

Indigurrito is Nao Bustamante's contribution to the many performances that commemorated the 500 anniversary of the conquest of America. The title mixes the term "indigenous" with "burrito," the name of the famous Mexican wrap. In the performance, Bustamante challenged the white men in the audience to go onstage to express their apologies for the years of oppression of indigenous peoples by eating a piece of a burrito that Bustamante had strapped on to her hips. With humor and sarcasm, Bustamante addressed the issues that the 500-year commemoration brought to collective attention. Her piece also denounces how art institutions forced artists to pay tribute to the date if they wanted to get funding.

The Association of Theatrical Practices Gardzienice was founded in 1976 by Wlodzimierz Staniewski in a village near Lublin, which remains the group's headquarters to this day. Staniewski had just finished a five-year period of collaboration with Jerzy Grotowski’s Teatr Laboratorium. The group does create theatrical productions, but its main work is to conduct research into folk culture, as well as ethnic and anthropological studies. Members of the group take part in expeditions. There the shape of future productions is formed, productions which are evolving more and more closely towards modern mystery plays, restoring tragedy from the spirit of music. In this documentary, the process of the very particular "ethno-theatrical" expeditions that Gardzienice Centre was making in the past is portrayed. It shows the preparation, the way that the interactions with local communities happened, and how the material that was collected later informed them during the creation of performances.

This film stumbles upon the secret of any ritual; that is, because ritual reconciles oppositions that are inherently irreconcilable, it always risks evoking expressions of hostility, anger or grief. Here, unwittingly, the camera focuses on the Native American who has accepted the role of Cacique Domingo in a pageant reenacting the "peaceful reconquest" of Santa Fe by Spaniards in 1692. Offended by the caricature of Plains Indians costumes and war paints donned by Hispanics and Anglos in the pageant, tears run down the face of the "chief" as the insensitivity to the role of Pueblo Indians in the historical representation is revealed to him.

Mental Masturbation, a Super 8 short imbued with a blessed soundtrack of trance music (an element that would be recurrent in all his latter films), was a point of start into what would be the most appreciated (and hated) element of Manuli’s cinema: The rescue of the absurdist to paint an atmosphere of freedom, in which music (in this case, electronic music) serves as the only link of meaningful communication between its characters, or between its protagonists and the settings of his films, the relation man-man and man-nature.
