“I created this film using my favourite motifs and techniques - the surface tension of water, the image of night and time permeating the stone, vertical movement in space, and action cutting to transcend distance. I took my time with it, like bonsai or gardening as a hobby. I repeatedly made and remade it, and there were parts I was still unsure of, but I presented it anyway a year later. That's when the filmmaker Kanai Katsu spotted it. I had an idea based on what he pointed out to me, so I remade that part and the work took its final form. Maybe because I enjoyed making it, I'm fond of this work.” (Isao Kota)

A vibrant and perceptive documentary that celebrates the fiddling dancing traditions of Native American and Metis families on both sides of the United States and Canadian border. Although European in origin, fiddling and step-dancing traditions of both Indian and mixed-blood descendants reflect a strong Native American influence and are sustained largely by Native American spiritual ideals. This remarkable film weaves music, dance, and storytelling into a compelling and entertaining experience.

With startling immediacy, this short film captures the shock and horror the Chinese students experienced when government troops opened fire on them in Tiananmen Square. We hear students rallying for democracy just moments before they were to be gunned down. Skillfully compiled from still photographs smuggled out of China, eyewitness accounts, and news sound tracks, it recreates this tragic event in Chinese history. This unforgettable document will remind Americans that the dream of democracy does not come without sacrifice. From high school students studying world events to "Asia watchers" at universities, this film is a must.

Neither this shore of this life nor the other shore of the after life. Had I crossed the other shore? It was a world created by light, shadow, people, and scenery captured on a small camera. A single moment captured on a single frame of 8mm film, small enough to fit on a finger, becomes a continuous string of life when played back.I must have held my breath, steadying my handheld camera as if contemplating, as I crossed the other shore. The footage ended with a view of the ocean at dawn in the middle of winter in the northern country. No, it wasn't over. A long time ago, a friend from my film school days told me, while drunk, "You should live your life like you're singing." I was nowhere near able to live that lightly, but after that, I spent several years creating this film. I drifted with a single will, and I think I finally finished it, even though it was unfinished. At the time, I couldn't respond to my friend's words, but even now I don't know if “Move like a Wind" was my answer.

Round 8 of the ‘91 World Rally Championship saw Lancia’s bid for major honours intensify, in their attempt to stop the irrepressible Carlos Sainz in his Toyota Celica GT4. The Spaniard’s race however was prone to disaster. As early as the 4th stage he had a puncture; by the end of it the wheel was destroyed and his turbocharger had failed. Lancia’s Didier Auriol and Miki Biasion meantime held onto the first two places. Sainz fought back and the three remained in close contention, a mere 8 seconds dividing the leading pair! Watch out for a quite spectacular arrival onto the victory ramp at the end of a superb contest!

In 1990, filmmaker Jan Špáta headed to the North Moravian border region to join photographer Jindřich Štreit. His social humanist black-and-white images of the most ordinary life situations were close to his heart and offered themselves as a means of bearing witness to the social and spiritual state of Czech society on the threshold of freedom. "By allowing myself to be carried away by the world of Štreit's photographs, it is, in terms of content, one of my most raw films", Špáta rightly says. Štreit recalls, "I showed him different settings, what he would be interested in, what he would like, and it is true that he had a very easy job in two ways. Firstly, because these people were used to being photographed, and secondly, I chose the most attractive settings and the most attractive people. I knew that they were photogenic and that these were carrying situations".

The Dream of the Darkest Hour takes the intrigue and mystery of Bobe's other works but exacerbates it in such a way that it is overpowered by aesthetics and experimental tonality. Within how limited its elements are, each one of them plays a fundamental role since without one, the others tend to remain in the air.

"Only at First" was shot over several months from the back of my house in Lewes, East Sussex. It records in part the development of a wetland site into a housing development, using a variety of filming strategies including animated permutations of sets of framings, as well as freer sequences that make use of the Bolex camera’s motorised zoom function. A variety of lenses was used, from 10mm wide angle to 300mm tele-photo, which latter compresses the space, and hence the atmosphere, to create ephemeral, unstable shots full of airy ‘noise’. - Nicky Hamlyn
