To the child mind, the transformative sacrificial power of "O, Lamb of God" is a daily manifestation - not as an adult shift-of-interest, but rather as ritual magic in which a toy train ("-of-thought," an adult might say) becomes medium of shifts-of-scene, soforth, wherein an elephantine shape transforms to a more "real" (i.e., less metaphorical) train, in sacrifice of transformative elephant, so on-&-on. An earlier film, THE MACHINE OF EDEN, is of some similar construct (as is a good deal of western painting) in its insistence upon contemporary mise-en-scene as grounds for Biblical lore.

The Upper Gate was about Sidon (The capital of the south of Lebanon), the filmmaker Arab Loutfi’s home town; in which she wove a history of the city through the stories of its people. In her film she tries after the 1982 Israeli invasion, which caused so much damage and chaos, to reconstruct her own memories of the place offering accounts of herself, her sister Maha, her uncle and her friends, interspersing them with newspaper clips and personal photographs to illustrate her preoccupations and concerns in relation to Sidon at different times.

From 1984 to 1988, Robb Moss travelled around the world as a free-lance cameraman. In 1984 he got married, to Jean. They decided to start a family. During the subsequent four years, Robb's life moved to and fro between his job as a cameraman and the regular, but failing attempts to have children. In THE TOURIST he brings these two worlds together and examines the various ways in which the personal and professional crises mirrored each other: at times comically, sometimes ironically, at other times confusedly. A reflection on fertility, uselessness, and making documentaries. -IDFA

Izkor is about the orchestration of memory. The film shows how school children of all ages in Israel are taught to pay tribute to their nation's past. It keenly observes how some memories are even physically conditioned into the future generations. "One of the most truly, most intelligent, most terrible and sharpest films about Israeli society. A film on memory and politics: this is the way that Israeli society exploits its myths to train people to have no doubts or remorse, creating the soldiers of the future wars." (Tom Segev - Haaretz)

The 20th Latvian Song and Dance Festival was the first in which compatriots from all corners of the world gathered in a free Latvia, including those who had gone into exile in the West and those who had been forcibly deported to Siberia. Director Dzintra Geka also brings together those who were unable to return to their homeland – footage for the film was shot in Sweden, at the 6th European Latvian Song Festival in Norrköping, where Latvian Minister of Justice Laila Freivalde, who is of Latvian descent, marches alongside her compatriots, and in Siberia, in the village of Lejas Bulāna, where Latvian women sing "...because this is Latvia, this is Bulāna...". The older generation of Canadian Latvians also dance at the festival with the Dardedze dance group from Toronto, while Mārtiņš Brauns prepares his song Saule, Pērkons, Daugava (Sun, Thunder, Daugava) for the choir.

For the world, the Auschwitz camp is a symbol of the Holocaust, genocide, and terror. Never before in human history were so many people murdered in a planned way. In such a short time and in such a small space. Between 1940 and 1945, the Nazi Germans deported over a million Jews, nearly 150,000 Poles, 23,000 Roma, and 15,000 Soviet prisoners of war, and about 25,000 prisoners of other nationalities here. The overwhelming majority of them perished in the camp. This film is dedicated to the memory of each and every one of them.
