“I believed this (Reel #1) film to have been lost, so it missed being on the Prismatic Music disc along with Reels #2, #3 and “#4. This one offers a portrait of a classical music d.j. broadcasting on WDET public radio, glimpses of a rehearsal and performance of ‘The Nutcracker’ at Ford Auditorium, students working in my filmmaking class, and the editing, inking and cleaning of this very film. These four reels provide idiosyncratic views of the city.” (J.B.)

RR uses musical models as a paradigm. The central part of each section of the film is based on a transcription of a Bach composition for two voices. The two screens underscore this paradigm insofar as one is always the simultaneous reflection of the visual development of the other, regardless of the position of the reels (left or right): a visual representation of the inversion technique of a theme that is often used in music. The use of mirroring deliberately side-steps the question of the reality of representation. It no longer has any importance, now that we’re in the domain of the reflected image, of imitation. The two images reflect one another in a constant back and forth, mimicking to a certain extent the development of the (fake) pans that comprise the film. The pans metaphorically evoke, if only superficially, the keyboard.

The film is a garden full of flowers and plant leaves. They’re placed in the mouth and down inside the dress neckline; they’re danced with and set in motion. They become overlong toenails or breasts that are gently caressed or maliciously squeezed. All of this goes on accompanied by both classical music and punk. In the end, they wilt.

In December of 1984, a "living" billboard was erected on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles as a promotion for a line of jewelry. A group of aspiring actors took up residence on it, each competing to outlast the others and win a screen test. Artists Chip Lord, Branda Miller and Antonio Muntadas collaborated to produce three views of this public spectacle, creating a work collectively titled Media Hostages. Muntadas' S.S.S. is a personal, visual commentary using the billboard as a "Media Case" in the larger context of America, circa 1985.

A Tale for Madmen begins as a fable. The wolf, the main character, first escapes from an imaginary animal republic in the Prague Zoo. He moves around the city in human form, disguised as a clown, in an animal mask and later as a decadent girl. In the process, he confronts the realities of late socialism: he visits the Spartakiad, an amusement park and a dance hall at the Exhibition Grounds. At the end of the film, he transforms into the form of a bird and, under the pressure of the hopeless environment, voluntarily dies. The film authentically reflects the hopeless atmosphere of the timelessness of the late 1980s, combining documentary approaches with stylized scenes. Using this method, it captures the romantic conflict between free individuality and resigned society. The film was shot using Pigi's usual method – by setting a fictional character in authentic contemporary realities.

Bulgaria - one of Russia's staunchest allies - isn't usually thought of as a great source of jokes -yet it is Bulgaria that mounts a unique biennial laughter festival in the House of Humour and Satire in Gabrovo. From around the world wits and comics converge on this Balkan town to exhibit, judge, or simply discuss the serious business of humour. There were two British participants at the last festival. One was exhibiting, the other, 'Larry' of Punch, was a judge. This film tackles the weighty question of whether humour can leap national boundaries, whether the same joke can reduce communist and capitalist to the same helpless giggles.

Words of the poet Mahmoud Darwish float through this film: “Tell me. Perhaps I will remember my home whose perfume is only on my lips.” A 17-year-old Palestinian introduces herself: Aida, the returning one. When her father was killed in battle, her mother was already dead, killed by a bomb. When she was eight, she was sent to a PLO orphanage in Beirut, then to an orphanage in Damascus, then to an orphanage in Tunis. Here she takes care of new orphans. The portrait of a girl expands: countless children who will forget their homeland and origin. There is nothing but war left in their drawings. The PLO had assigned its collaborator Marwan Salamah to study cinematography at Babelsberg. Here, he is also the director. In 1985, “Aida” won the Prize of the World Federation of Democratic Youth in Leipzig.
