Cinematic Era: 1985 Vintage

The resilience of Traditional African Religions Practiced in The United States.

In 1972, Jean Gaumy took some of his first photos in a smoked herring factory in Fécamp. Particularly attracted by one of the workshops, that of the women who cut up the fish, he decided to make his first film with them. Some of them have been doing this tedious work for over twenty-five years. All of them are full of enthusiasm, full of a vitality that contrasts with the dirt and difficulties of their work.

Gravity is a film about four graduate students working in an experimental astrophysics lab at MIT.

Documents the massive attendance of Puerto Ricans at Rafael Cortijo's funeral, one of the maximum exponents of Puerto Rican music. This experimental film is one of the few surviving records of his burial.

Woodbridge is a deeply personal expose of family life within the context of first generation Italian-Canadians. The film revolves around the journey of a boy from early childhood through adulthood. It highlights the conflicts of growing up in the space between two cultures with radically different customs and values. While this film documents the particular experiences of one child, it is a reflection of a sociological phenomenon common to many Canadian children. Woodbridge is different from most other documentary work primarily because the camera adopts the role of the protagonist. It presents the viewer with a multitude of images/experiences from a purely subjective point of view. The film's immediacy invites the audience to participate in the events directly, as opposed to the usual documentary experience of filmmaker as authority, audience as observer.

A conversation with the Swedish author Birgitta Trotzig (1929-2011) , member of the Swedish Academy between 1993 and 2011. Trotzig's language is strongly driven and honored, often dark and hard-to-reach, but with a sharpness penetrating deeply into the reader susceptible to her prose. The main themes of her books are guilt and liberation, often with a Christian vocabulary, and the balance between ethics and ethics.

Willie is a realistic film made in Bernalillo, home of Willie Jaramillo and filmmakers Danny and Nancy Weiss Lyon. Defiantly individual and implaccable in the face of authority, Willie is repeatedly thrown into jail, at first for relatively minor offenses. The filmmakers gain access to jail cells, day rooms, lunatic wards, and the worst cellblock in the penitentiary, where Willie is locked up next to his childhood friend and convicted murderer, Michael Guzman.

America is a legend, an idea. To rediscover the traces of such an idea within the reality of a city requires a transformation of this very city into ideas and legends, to the point that life and death, the real and the imaginary, past and future, that which can be communicated, and that which cannot,high and low are open to a contradictory understanding. Oral witnesses tell about their work in the Austrian underground movement against the national socialist regime. Agnes Primoschitz, Johanna Sadolschek-Zala, Rosl Grossmann-Breuer and Anni Haider talk about helping concenreation camp prisoners escape, fighting with the partisans and imprisonment, and about various experiences which bring back happy and sad memories. Many of their friends and relatives did not survive the terrible time. Some of the oral witnesses hadn't counted on surviving the prisons and concentration camps.

Killing a human being "in cold blood" requires unique mental preparation and single-minded determination. To pull the trigger a second time may be easier, but the moments between the shots must be calculatingly controlled, the precision of "getting it right" must be sustained. Representing this tormenting tapestry of emotion, the arts of acting and moviemaking become a tug-of-war between reality and imagination. A lifetime of regrets, anguish, confusion and frustration may erupt in the fleeting moments between the takes. In this film writer/director Peter Tammer explores the FEAR OF THE DARK through the person of the actor Robert Ratti, holding together the hopes and fears of the performer who is facing survival on a day-to-day basis for the opportunity to work in the future. This visual fantasy confronts a level of consciousness we've all touched, reminding us that we were not alone in the dark, facing a reality we dare not imagine.
