Samad is to be sent to the city courthouse for his fights where he points his finger at others, and he happens to be handcuffed to a male smuggler. Along the way, the smuggler manages to escape with the help of one of his accomplices, and since his hand was tied to Samad's, they are forced to take Samad with them. After they untie the handcuffs, they decide to kill Samad, but the smuggler's accomplice, who was a girl and happened to be the daughter of the gang boss, does not allow them to kill Samad out of emotion. So they take him to a cinema and while Samad is immersed in a Bruce Lee karate movie, they leave him there and leave. Samad becomes fascinated with Bruce Lee and karate after watching the karate movie, and after returning to the village, he tries to teach the villagers karate by imitating Bruce Lee's martial arts moves.

Anna, an artist, is obsessed with the invasion of alien doubles bent on total destruction. Her schizophrenia is reflected in the juxtapositions of long movie camera takes with violently edited montages: private with public spaces; black & white with colour, still photographs with video, earsplitting sounds with disruptive camera angles. Anna uses her body like a map; after a devastating quarrel with her lover, she paints red stitches on herself. Watching their scenes together, we realize how seldom, if ever before, the details of sexual intimacy have been shown in film from the point of view from a woman. Export privileges rupture over unity and never settles for one-dimensional solutions

“Freud established that jokes were structurally akin to dreams in their use of condensation, displacement, representation by opposites, punning and ‘nonsense’. All of these strategies are much in evidence in (Land’s) marvelously duplicitous ON THE MARRIAGE BROKER JOKE… [...] so clever and original a filmmaker as to make most others – not to mention his critics – seem flat-footed by comparison. ON THE MARRIAGE BROKER JOKE harks back to Bunuel’s early work. Not only is it structured like a dream and filled with sexual imagery, but like Un Chien Andalou, it smacks of being an insider’s joke played upon the avant-garde. Where Bunuel used the insights of psychoanalysis to satirize Christianity, Land– with an almost equal perversity – reverses the process and uses Christianity to send up Freud.” – J. Hoberman, American Film

Directed by Pablo de la Barra, Queridos compañeros (1977) is a Chilean-Venezuelan political drama that delves into the fervent revolutionary movements of the late 1960s. The film follows a group of young radical leftists that struggle to change the Chilean political status quo. The production of Queridos compañeros faced significant challenges, since filming started in 1973 but was abruptly halted due to the military coup in Chile that year. Director Pablo de la Barra managed to save the film's footage but lost the original audio tracks. In exile in Venezuela, he reconstructed the sound with the help of the original actors, completing the film in 1977. The film offers a poignant reflection on the aspirations and struggles of a generation striving for systemic change, providing insight into the political dynamics of Chile during a tumultuous period.

The world-famous Alhambra—empty of tourists, between midnight and 4 AM—plays host to a deeply moving selection of Segovia’s signature pieces, many in his own arrangements, all imbued with the meditative, profoundly soulful qualities that lifted him to the pinnacle of artistry and helped him redefine what was considered possible for guitarists.

'The Silent Cry is a fictionalised narrative film, based on documentary facts and extracts of one English girl's memories and thoughts, all surrounded, and directed towards her particular dilemma. This dilemma can be summarized as her basic inability to have relationships, especially sustained relationships, and particularly with men. This is the total of her statement and the film. The construction and flow of the film follows the way she thinks - it is her point of view that is followed in the film. So all things are the way she remembers and dwells on them, and which are important to her.' - S.D.

The first part of the film is in colour and consists of arguments about how to make films and what film to make. The film then changes to black and white and the argument continues about houses and planning, with shots of the destruction of a house, and shots from other films of the houses it used to be. The arguments are not conclusive and the film is about doubts rather than certainties. - A.R.

This begins the fourth chapter of The Book of Film and entertains directly the considerations of chapter two (THE WEIR-FALCON SAGA, THE MACHINE OF EDEN, and THE ANIMALS OF EDEN AND AFTER). Person begins to be defined by what it is not. It might be said that chapter one (SCENES FROM UNDER CHILDHOOD) set forth birth and being, chapter two - consciousness, chapter three (SINCERITY) - self-consciousness; thus SOLDIERS AND OTHER COSMIC OBJECTS begins that strictly philosophical task of distinguishing (from, in this case, the rituals and trials of public school). I like to think of it as a work that Ludwig Wittgenstein might have found more enjoyable. Soldiers and Other Cosmic Objects (1976) is largely concerned with the children’s experience and navigation of the larger social world. Consisting of a series of short contrasting vignettes, the film begins with the warm depiction of a home’s interior in which a child arranges toy figurines into grid-like military arrangement.

As the title indicates this is a deliberately academic work, conceived in much the same way that a composer might make a 'study'. It is not about a Cezanne painting, but attempts to apply certain concepts related to the relativity of changing viewpoints in observation and recording. In much the same way as a Cezanne painting records within its image, the problem of stabilizing a perception and the way in which shifts in viewpoint modify the spatial experience, the film uses time lapse and time exposure to seek a filmic equivalent for this aesthetic. –M. L. G.
