By the time "It's A Mean Old World" was filmed, Reverend Pearly Brown had been struggling to survive singing gospel music for nearly 40 years. While the rough sound of his bottleneck playing has the feel of a life spent scuffling on the street, the poignancy of his voice is a better measure of the gentle spirit and inner strength of the man.

Inspired by a dream of a monkey who tells "stories" by waving a stick that emits abstract shapes, light and movement, this is the "story" of a sculptor making sculpture. It is also a form of dreaming with Cinema. Constructed in lush, layered images, we see sculpture, Jon von Bergen at work but the true subject of this filmic tapestry is the elusive and enigmatic quality of the creative process. By Dave Gearey (1977, 16mm, 13 mins., color, sound)

The driving force behind the action is the scheming impostor Nebel, who fleeces the nouveau riche, especially Florian von Fett, formerly a master butcher, now a "partikulier" (private entrepreneur). Fett does not feel at home in the modern society to which he now belongs thanks to his wealth, and he covers up his insecurities with behavior that is sometimes naive, sometimes crude. The Marchese Vincelli embodies the parody of the ruined nobility, which has long since become unfit for life due to its excessive sensitivity, while the landlord of "Zum silbernen Rappen" is the cunning social climber of the people. A marriage-hungry old maid, an obediently curtsying daughter, and a snappy maid complete the panopticon of this cozy yet uncomfortable Biedermeier world.

A tribute to Mallarmé that not only asserts the continuing relevance of his work but also confronts its literary ambiguities with political and cinematic ambiguities of its own. In outline, the film could not be more straightforward: it offers a recitation of one of Mallarmé’s most celebrated and complex poems (it was his last published work in his own lifetime, appearing in 1897, a year before his death) and proposes a cinematic equivalent for the author’s original experiment with typography and layout by assigning the words to nine different speakers, separating each speaker from the other as she or he speaks, and using slight pauses to correspond with white spaces on the original page.

In this landmark 1977 documentary, narrator Ronald Eyre journeys to Taiwan to explore the vibrant and complex world of Chinese folk religion. Facilitated by the pioneering team behind ECHO Magazine—Linda Wu (吳美雲), Huang Yong-song (黃永松), and Yao Meng-chia (姚孟嘉) —the film captures a rare and precious glimpse of 1970s Taiwan, a time when ancient spiritual traditions remained deeply woven into the fabric of daily life. From the thunderous temple festivals and the mystical trances of spirit mediums to the quiet ancestral rites in family halls, "A Question of Balance" examines how the pursuit of the "Way" (the Tao) provides a sense of cosmic harmony amidst a modernizing society. It stands as a definitive visual record of a vanishing era, showcasing the enduring power of Taoist belief and its diverse pantheon of deities.
