By the time "It's A Mean Old World" was filmed, Reverend Pearly Brown had been struggling to survive singing gospel music for nearly 40 years. While the rough sound of his bottleneck playing has the feel of a life spent scuffling on the street, the poignancy of his voice is a better measure of the gentle spirit and inner strength of the man.

Constructed in lush, layered images, we see sculpture, Jon von Bergen at work but the true subject of this filmic tapestry is the elusive and enigmatic quality of the creative process. Asgar and Qader have been friends since childhood. Hussein General, a man of bad character who leads the local teenagers in a fight with the teenagers of Qala Sangi neighborhood, has dedicated his life to their happiness. Asgar and Qader both loved Zainab; but Zainab is married to Asgar. Asgar, who is suspicious of his wife's affairs, constantly annoys Hussein General and Qader. One day, while picking date clusters from a palm tree, while thinking about his wife's relationship with Qader, he falls from the top of the palm tree and loses his sight. Zainab and Qader take care of him; but Asgar's sense of pessimism and suspicion towards his wife and Qader increases. Asgar drags Qader to the palm grove and while he is praying, he cuts him to pieces with a turban and throws his body into the sea. General Hussein, who witnesses the incident, informs Zeinab; but he, unable to allay his wife's insane suspicion, kindly invites the local waterman to his house for lunch.

A seasoned cowboy reminisces about his experiences, challenges, and the changing nature of cowboy culture. He expresses nostalgia for the past when cowboying was a way of life filled with camaraderie and hard work. The cowboy shares stories of his adventures, struggles with aging, and the decline of traditional ranching practices, ultimately revealing a sense of loneliness and the longing for meaningful connections.

The driving force behind the action is the scheming impostor Nebel, who fleeces the nouveau riche, especially Florian von Fett, formerly a master butcher, now a "partikulier" (private entrepreneur). Fett does not feel at home in the modern society to which he now belongs thanks to his wealth, and he covers up his insecurities with behavior that is sometimes naive, sometimes crude. The Marchese Vincelli embodies the parody of the ruined nobility, which has long since become unfit for life due to its excessive sensitivity, while the landlord of "Zum silbernen Rappen" is the cunning social climber of the people. A marriage-hungry old maid, an obediently curtsying daughter, and a snappy maid complete the panopticon of this cozy yet uncomfortable Biedermeier world.

A cop "drops out" and becomes a polygamist, ultimately taking on 12 wives, and begins his own town with his "family". The authorities are repulsed by his eccentric lifestyle, and he finds himself being investigated by them on charges of drug trafficking and fencing stolen property. Based on a true story.

In outline, the film could not be more straightforward: it offers a recitation of one of Mallarmé’s most celebrated and complex poems (it was his last published work in his own lifetime, appearing in 1897, a year before his death) and proposes a cinematic equivalent for the author’s original experiment with typography and layout by assigning the words to nine different speakers, separating each speaker from the other as she or he speaks, and using slight pauses to correspond with white spaces on the original page.
