A cyclical film, without sound, that goes from day to night and back again. First, from the porch glider, daytime movement is seen--children running and bicycles and cars going by. The nighttime scene is a long poetic and dream-like look at adolescent lovemaking.

The film is a portrait of Allison Krause, one of the students murdered at Kent State University on May 4, 1970 by the Ohio National Guard. It is a memorial put together from footage that Richard Myers and his students filmed of Allison (unknowingly at the time) during student war demonstrations. The film’s images are very simple but the soundtrack read by Arthur Krause, Allison’s father, is deeply moving. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2014.

The author Peter Ustinov has called his work "Endspurt" a "biographical adventure". Biographical because the somewhat ambitious but later successful writer Sam Kinsale meets here as a twenty-, forty- and sixty-year-old. The interesting thing about this film, however, is that the four Sams are confronted with each other. The diversity of an eighty-year-old life becomes transparent. At the age of 20, Sam Kinsale loves the young Stella and is determined to marry her. But 20 years later, he is fed up with the marriage and wants to leave her. But he doesn't because she is expecting a child. As a sixty-year-old, he is constantly making compromises both in his work as a writer and in his personal life.

To Tea, made in Holland (at the house of the Dutch avant-garde filmmaker Franz Zwartjes), is a slowed ‘Alice in Roomland’.A guide to sensual contact between two women. Their contact is arrived at through an arrangement of slow tactics. As the light of day goes the bodies come closer, and the piano melody floats in a distant hall. Once my Hungarian art teacher said: “If you exaggerate the objective lines you reach a stronger subjective expression.” So here the strange tea party gives over to touch. – S.D.

A natural activity under the stress of an unnatural setting. Gravity reneged. Vast scale. Clear order. You start at the top, walk straight down, stop at the bottom. All those soupy questions that arise in the process of selecting abstract movement according to the modern dance tradition -- what, when, where, and how -- are all solved in collaboration between choreographer and place. If you eliminate all those eccentric possibilities that the choreographic imagination can conjure and just have a person walk down an aisle, then you see the movement as the activity. The paradox of one action working against another is very interesting to me, and is illustrated by Man Walking Down the Side of a Building, where you have gravity working one way on the body and my intention to have a naturally walking person working in the other way.

This is one of a series of films that Broodthaers made on the subject of the pipe, a reference to the work of René Magritte. A static camera depicts images of a pipe, clock, and smoke against a whitewashed brick wall. The superimposed titles were added in 1971, and include the labels ‘Figure I’ and ‘Figure II’, phrases that recur throughout Broodthaers oeuvre, and echo Magritte’s concern with the relationship between object, image and language.

The document, which splices together footage from both Osaka and Montreal, offers a rare comparative insight into the two events. It is believed to have been part of a longer documentary made in collaboration with Masuo Ogawa. These "world’s fairs" were colossal events featuring displays from countries and corporations around the world, providing a testing ground for technologies from IMAX screens to security systems. Despite a culture of ambivalence and resistance surrounding Expo ’70, due to its depoliticized celebration of “progress and harmony for mankind” in the era of U.S.-sponsored conflicts in Asia, the pavilions were often run in collaboration with artists.
