Cinematic Era: 1970 Vintage

A Knee Ad is a loose take-off on Virgil's Aeneid, but only in the limited sense that both are about journeys, and therefore about motion. In A Knee Ad the journey is not from Troy to Rome, although perhaps it is a journey to meet destiny ... if one takes destiny to be the terminus towards which all motions point. I do not think of A Knee Ad as a journey around New York, although most of the footage was shot while leaving, entering, or commuting within, this city. Instead what appears on the screen is a journey around the environs of the screen itself. The cinematic frame can be used as a microcosm of the mythic macrocosm: I think of A Knee Ad as a sort of camp mythopoesy reduced to the level of absurdity.

During the Battle of Stalingrad, five German soldiers and officers are taken prisoner of war by the Soviets. In an interview, they talk about the fear of retribution, the question of guilt and the gradual shattering of an enemy image. The process of their rethinking is also due to their encounter with the "National Committee Free Germany". Pilot officer Charisius got into conversation with the Soviet writer Fedin in the camp. Decades later, Charisius remembers it. Pictures of the destroyed Stalingrad and scenes of the men in their present-day environment complement the conversation.

An educational film intended for children from 6 to 8 years of age. ‘We Grew A Frog, 1970’ tells the story of two schoolchildren, Lynne and Martin, who collect frog spawn from the village pond, take it to school, and there, in a tank, watch the spawn grow into frogs. The film shows in close-up the developmental stages of the spawn-to-frog process. This educational film features the pupils of Whatfield School in Suffolk. Headteacher, Gwen Dunn wrote and told the story.

In February 1969 activists and students gather on the Underground Square between East and West exit of Shinjuku Station. They declare the place a greek 'agora', a place where people connect and debate about politics. When they collide with anti-protesters the police closes the gathering place down.

Bollywood 1970

An eccentric film director (Gabriel Cattand) conducts a search for a modern day Joan of Arc. His harridan wife (Ursula Kubler) hounds him constantly during the selection process. When he finally selects the perfect actress, she is driven to suicide before filming can begin in this pretentious picture.

In Elections, images appear of the center of Varese during the electoral campaign period in 1970, in which Brebbia participated as a PSU candidate. We see boys in the Brebbia shop, among them we recognize the daughter Giovanna and Claudio Panini. In some frames you can also see Brebbia.

Using video recording technology, the citizens of Rosedale, once referred to as "the rear end of Alberta" by a frustrated citizen, pulled themselves together as a community. An unknown observer is seen traveling through a bleak corridor. At the end of the corridor they see a naked woman, whom they are unable to reach as their trip seems to become increasingly twisted and looped.

This film shows that success can be achieved by applying the theoretical knowledge taught in the classroom to practical life, and shows that people get to know each other and become friends during the work process through the relationship between the old and the young. Myada, a student of the agricultural school, will be assigned to the hay brigade led by Dorje for training. The wise old men Baldan, Jugder, Buriad Bazar and the young haymaker Bold are experienced haymakers who work hand-in-hand and try to enforce the haying period according to the book taught to them.

Years later, these intertwined love stories resurface, altering the fates of all involved. Directed by HSIN Chi in his final Taiyupian, with a theme song by Judy ONGG, it poignantly captures the era’s social issues.
