This film went on to win Academy Award® for Best Documentary Short in 1968.

The maid struggles to make tea for the Klostermann family, who sit stiffly in evening gowns with plastic egg cups on their heads and paper in their noses. One daughter stabs the maid. The family watches the maid’s excessive dancing, amused and embarrassed. Carla collapses repeatedly, with a twitch being the last.

This uneven and uninspired documentary of Africa is a collection from various stock footage. Female dancers in mod clothes dance on the Eiffel Tower in comparison to the primitive dances of native Africans. A lone runner trains for a marathon, and a few animals are shown in their natural habitat. Commentary and modern jazz and pop music help to make this seem much longer than 66 minutes.

During the 1947 Partition, a mother and her children are separated while migrating to Pakistan. Years later, the siblings grow up in different parts of society, unaware of each other’s lives. The film follows their separate journeys and focuses on family ties shaped by loss and separation.

The young Amar, father of two children, lives on expedients and looks in vain for a job in Algiers. He decides to emigrate to France, and finds a job there, but quickly loses it after a roundup and custody for several days. Led by two shady Europeans he met in a café, he embarks with other unemployed people for well-paid work on the plantations of Madagascar. The boat that takes them finally docks in Algiers! This film had disappeared for almost fifty years. Ahmed Bedjaoui mourned it until the Berlin Cinematheque found the only copy of this work in its archives, restored it, subtitled it and screened it at the opening of its festival in 2015. The film was thrilled the large audience present, made up of professionals and knowledgeable film buffs. Due to the modesty of its self-produced means, but also by aesthetic choice, the film oscillates between neo-realist cinema and cinema vérité.

Tape composition by William Maraldo. XFILM is my very personal exploration of film as an abstract, kinetic medium. The film, after many months of experimentation with rhythm and form, finally collected and crystallized when I heard Bill Maraldo's unusual electronic tape piece. The opening of XFILM grew from my hearing of that piece, and I still believe that the first five minutes of this film are the most inspired filmmaking I have yet done.
