In the best films of Hans Cürlis the acts of filming and painting coincide. The portrait of a portraitist. Max Oppenheimer (Mopp; 1885-1954) was a well-known portraitist and painter of musicians and orchestras. In this case he paints the portrait of Heinrich Mann, while Cürlis portrays Heinrich Mann as he is being portrayed by Mopp and Mopp as he is portraying Heinrich Mann. Thus the "Schaffende Hände" — Creative Hands — are both those of the painter and those of the film director Cürlis: these are hand-made films.

The story is based on the prose series Kim Van Kieu by Thanh Tam Tai Nhan and set in China during the reign of Emperor Gia Tinh during the Ming Dynasty (from 1521 to 1567). The characters include governor Ho Ton Hien, prostitute Vuong Thuy Kieu, and Tu Hai, a real historical figure who was a merchant and pirate leader of the Ming Dynasty.

To avoid losses in the event of a likely shipwreck, he takes out high insurance on the sloop. Germany was forbidden to rebuild after World War I, but the Zeppelin Company was allowed to make one for the U.S. Navy as partial war reparation. Filled with hydrogen and manned by a German crew, the ZR-3, later renamed Los Angeles, flew 5,000 miles in 82.5 hours to Lakehurst, New Jersey in October, 1924. During its life, it logged 4,398 hours and 331 successful flights. Still in good flying condition, the Los Angeles was decommissioned and scrapped in October 1939, after the longest career of any rigid airship.
