Documentary about Kampen, one of the oldest Dutch Hanseatic cities, located along the river Gelderse IJssel. We see its most important buildings, including the Hoofdcursus, which is the training building for army officers. Officers from the Indische Leger also trained here.

Tropical Nights is a true “scenic.” Putting aside conventional narrative, the film tells its story by following the lights and shadows on a Caribbean island over the course of a diurnal cycle. As day evolves into night and back to dawn, the camera moves from close-up to striking vistas, with color toning accentuating the mood.

In the piece, which is for the most part a straightforwards historical biopic from the DW Griffith school of narrative filmmaking, Ludwig is portrayed as an Idealist who cannot fit into the world of his contemporaries.

However the good-for-nothing Palmer has just returned to Sweden and has hatched a plan to earn some easy money by hustle the Viken ladies.
