Cinematic Era: 1918 Vintage

The print is without intertitles and shows images dedicated to various aspects of the First World War and military life. It is a collation of sundry material belonging to different documentaries; for instance, images may be recognized that are also present in "Tra i ghiacci e le nevi del Tonale" [lit. tr. Among the glaciers and snow at the Tonale pass]. Even the quality of the material, unfortunately often poor, varies a lot between one fragment and the next.

Major Temple vainly tries to purchase of the priests the Green God he sees on a visit to China. He commissions Robert Ashton to get it for him, promising him the hand of his daughter in marriage.

When her son has married beneath the family, Mrs. Van Twiller Du Bois disowns him and decides to leave her fortune to her nephew, Cecil Harrington. She does, however, agree to educate her granddaughter Mary, who comes to live with Mrs. Du Bois in hopes of reconciling her father and the old woman. Cecil, actually a local robber whose identity has just been discovered by the police, plans to rob his aunt and leave town. Just as he is emptying the safe, Mary enters the room, and when Mrs. Du Bois comes in, Cecil tries to blame Mary for the robbery. The police soon arrive to clear Mary's name and arrest Cecil, and Mrs. Du Bois is reconciled to her family.

When wealthy cattleman Bart Masters (Jack Holt) comes East, he falls in love with social butterfly Avice Bereton (Enid Bennett). She marries Bart for his money, all the while promising to continue her romance with society doctor Van Fleet (Donald MacDonald). Bart knows what's going on behind his back, but he insists that Avice return with him to his ranch and at least make an effort to be a dutiful wife.

In La morte che assolve, we see Elextra Ragio in two roles: Maddalena, a mother repudiated by her cruel husband Falco, a professional loan shark, and their daughter Erica, who is adopted by an American lady. As an adult, Erica is subjected to the advances of Count Giancarlo, who had once saved her life, and has to face a distressing encounter with the father who abandoned her. Melodrama brings out family values, and the supreme value of love.

Rehabilitation of the mutilated in the fields of WW1.

Phil Kelly, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, serves as an American spy during World War I unknown to his mother, fiancée Rose Lockely and friends, who sadly question his loyalty when he fails to enlist.

REVOLUTIONENS DATTER starred Danish boxer Waldemar Holberg. Holberg held a version (Australian) of the welterweight title for a month in 1914. From what I could see he made two films, in Norway in 1918, while fighting there from 1917 to 1919. So his film's survival rate is 50%. Billed as a 'folke komedie' in 4 acts (I saw no comedy), it does end with the obligatory boxing match. An interesting note is that the actor playing his opponent is Fred Boston. Waldemar Holberg knocked out a boxer named Fred Boston in Oslo in 1918, but it is Boston's only recorded match. Makes one wonder.....

Florence, a romantic "slavey" (a maidservant) works in a boarding house. She spends her days lost in daydreams of becoming a Juliet to a handsome, heroic Romeo. Her romantic illusions are initially tested by a disappointment involving Mr. Mudge, but she eventually she finds her "real hero" by the end of the film.

Abraham Lincoln, the boy, defends a funny little black boy accused of stealing a white rooster. After a swift chase, Jim, the black boy, is captured with the fowl under his arm, and he is about to be roughly handled by the angry youths when Abe intervenes and suggests that the trembling captive be given a fair trial by jury.

Polly persists in putting to Henry the embarrassing question, "Henry, am I really the first woman you ever loved or asked to marry you?" The arrival on the scene of one of the numerous women of Henry's affectionate past causes him to sweat drops of blood until he discovers that the only confidence exchanged with his wife by the mischievous lady is the news that she is engaged to be married.

Tragedy strikes after a painter has an affair with the wife of a prince.

Three sisters live with their aunt, the mistress of Junkershus, and are very annoyed at their sanctimonious and tiresome cousin Jonas, who sometimes carouse down in the town, sometimes crawls the most repulsively before the rich old lady. The most beautiful of the sisters, Madelaine, writes to their favorite cousin Curt Junker, and asks him to come and reveal Jonas's hypocrisy, which their aunt in her credulity seems to be blind to.

Anny helps Mario escape from prison after his attempted murder of Gaston de Roqueville, who is now married to Ninette. Banker Sorga, an enemy spy, attempts to steal Mario's latest invention: a powerful explosive that could alter the course of the war. Second part of Maurits Binger's epic trilogy, now considered lost.

Breaking the Treaty of London Italy occupied the Hungarian Harbour town Rijeka on the coast of Croatia during the last days of the war, ‘liberating’ it from the non-Italian enemy (à choix: Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Croatia, Slovenia). Footage of the celebration of the ‘liberation’, a nightmare that would end only in 1945, shows a happy crowd, women with bunches of flowers, one general gives a speech and the other decorates soldiers. The town was renamed Fiume and soon became the site of a bizarre and frightening episode with poet Gabriele D’Annunzio as the violently narcissistic leader of violently nationalistic irregular troops. Fiume, the place and the name, today signifies the beginning of fascism in Italy.

Sunshine comedy about mistaken identities.

Miss Blossom passes through middle age caring for her widowed brother and his only child, a daughter. A handsome explorer returns from an expedition and meets the family, whereupon he falls in love with the daughter. He departs for another long expedition, leaving behind a message regarding his intent to marry the daughter upon his return. But the message is misdirected to the elder Miss Blossom, who secretly loves the explorer and now awaits his return from far-off lands in joyous expectation of their marriage.

During World War I, Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. worked for the YMCA in France running canteens, clubs, and leave centers for soldiers and teaching French. She also designed the uniforms worn by the women workers in the YMCA. Views of Mrs. Roosevelt entertaining women YMCA workers in the garden of the home of her aunt, Mrs. Alice Green Hoffman, in Paris. There are medium close shots of Mrs. Roosevelt, the woman not wearing a hat, as she stands among a group of women.

A man installs his mistress, a renowned actress, in his mansion, before she gives in to another man. She leaves, but he learns twenty-two years later that she has a son who is his own but leads a life of debauchery.

French WW1 film.

After a busy day of playing pranks on their father's servants and guests, Harry Williams' daughters Jane and Katherine tumble into bed and fall asleep. Having seen a film depicting World War I fighting in Europe, little Jane dreams that two armies, consisting entirely of mechanical dolls, are advancing against each other in battle. While Trik leads the German troops, who are guilty of committing a score of atrocities, Trak heads the Allied army, which ultimately wins the war. In the end, Jane awakens with a start to find that it has all been a dream.

Lost film that introduces Max Fleischer's rotoscope animation to the public with the fluid movement of the Clown character. The Clown is animated over live-action reference footage of his brother Dave Fleischer who worked as a clown.

Count De Grancé have two degenerate children. For the adolescent daughter there is still some hope, as her main vice appears to be that she devours the novels of Emile Zola. The son leads a dissolute life in gambling dens, where he cheats at cards, and in night-clubs he associates with dancers. [As of 2024, it appears only a 12-minute fragment of the film survives, at EYE Filmmuseum.]

The Star Prince has fallen to Earth and because of his cruelty towards a beggar, he is turned into a grotesque pauper. He goes on a quest to find his mother, meeting a wicked witch and princess on his way. He falls in love with the princess, but an evil dwarf tries to force the princess to marry him. The Star Prince rescues the princess and is thus turned back into his original form and marries the beautiful princess.
