The Kino-nedelya newsreels constitute the first films of Dziga Vertov. A total of 43 issues, each containing an average of 5 to 7 different items, were produced between May 1918 and June 1919. In the fall of 1918, Vertov joined the newsreel’s ranks and soon took on full responsibility for the series, defining the content and structure of each issue. The films provide an invaluable record of life in the young Soviet Russia, then in the throes of civil war.

Women's work' takes on a new meaning in this diverting film showing the range of jobs taken by female workers in WWI, whether delivering post, driving lorries, hauling timber, or selling tickets on the trams. Some of the jobs are physically strenuous, and a few, such as climbing ladders to wash windows, required trousers instead of skirts. The film opens with women making cartridges, and closes in London with the Women's Land Army marching in uniform - just like their far-away men. With men away fighting, women worked in a variety of civilian occupations as well as in munitions factories, directly supporting the war effort. During the war, women proved themselves capable of doing the same work as men, and many of them were reluctant to give up their roles once the soldiers returned. At the end of 1919, the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act was passed, making it illegal to bar someone from a job based on their gender.

Soldiers walk in formation on a road accompanied by several mounted men. Because of the soldiers' heavy clothing, it must be winter. This group may be the 26th Infantry, Theodore and Archibald Roosevelt's regiment. Following sequence is of biplanes flying in formation; third sequence is shot at a hangar where men appear to be preparing a plane for flight. The second and third sequences may be of Quentin Roosevelt's squadron, the 95th. The last sequence probably represents Kermit Roosevelt's regiment, the 7th Field Artillery. In this sequence a group of men load and fire a cannon.
