Cinematic Era: 1915 Vintage

One of the earliest surviving short films by Franke Borzage. A simple western about a man who enjoys boozing, gambling and women.

A physician is dragged down to the depths by the drug habit, losing position and wealth. After pawning every available possession except a revolver to satisfy his craving for the drug, he returns to his cheap lodging house to end his life. Half stupefied, he gets into the wrong room, where he finds a woman and daughter almost starved. He takes his revolver and pawns it to buy food for them. His own act of kindness gives him a new view of life and he struggles to break his habit. Many times he almost falls again, but is aided by a nurse whom he had known years before. Finally he throws off the yoke altogether and wins back to manhood and the love of a woman.

Fred Herman, a farmer in Africa, with his wife and baby, lives in happiness. Carl Snyder, an animal trapper, stops at the Herman home. He sees some of Mrs. Herman's paintings and tells her that her talent is too great to be hidden in the wilderness. He asks her to come to the city with him where her artistic talents will have greater scope, and she agrees.

Manfredi, an habitual user of opium, is a piano player in a Chinese café. A wealthy tourist becomes interested in the young musician and sends him abroad to study. He promises Zuletta, his common law wife, that on his return he will marry her. Five years later he comes back, still addicted to the drug. Under its spell he is proclaimed a genius. Failing to make good his promise to Zuletta, he becomes infatuated with Margery Rhodes, a society girl, who comes to study music with him. So strongly is Margery influenced by her teacher, that she also acquires a taste for opium. John Hale, her lover, is in the secret service. Through the revengeful Zuletta, he learns that Manfredi conducts an opium joint. Hale has the place raided, just in time to save Mergery from a fate worse than death.

Criminal drama based on the materials of the sensational trial of the adventurous engineer Gilevich. The second series was released at the end of 1917. The 2nd and 4th parts have not survived.

Eddie leaves on the train for his uncle's place to meet the girl who has been picked out for him to marry, much to his displeasure. Victoria sets out for her aunt's for the same purpose and takes the same train. Neither knows the other and has no idea in what the other looks like. The fat man and his wife and three children board the train. Finding that they have left the baby's nursing bottle behind, the wife gets off to buy another and misses the train. At the next stop the fat man gets off to telegraph to his wife, leaving the children in charge of Eddie, who is his friend.

Ezra Hickman, of Kankakee, is a political aspirant. At a reception in Washington with his wife and daughter Amy he meets the Ambassador of Selim Bey, the ruler of a small European kingdom, Vergania. The Ambassador, seeking an American girl for his ruler, paints a glowing picture of Vergania to Hickman's wife, with the result that she persuades her husband to accept the American Consulate at. Vergania. Amy, the daughter, is enamored of Lieutenant Brice of the U.S. Navy, and reluctantly she agrees to leave him and go with her family.

Luke McVane (William S. Hart) shoots a card-cheat in self-defense and has to make a run for it before the town lynch him.

Gunnar Hesla grew up in a poor home, but at 25 he is a landowner.

A man neglects his wife to be with a dance hall singer. When the truth of his infidelity reaches his wife and the truth of his marital status reaches his lover, both women are heartbroken.

Tom Hickson leaves for the Diamond S ranch to become foreman.

The lives of a stenographer and her boss are thrown into turmoil by reckless gossip.

After robbing the bank at Orlock, Cherry and Newton make their getaway. When on the outskirts of Lone Point, the men cut the telephone wires. Helen, however, learns of the robbery. Never suspecting that the crooks are headed for the station, the girl is taken by surprise when Newton and his pal hold her up.

Comic short reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew".

Helen spotting two jewel robbers sever the telegraph wires and hop onto a passing freight, jumps into a racing auto and takes off in pursuit. In the meantime, the freight's brakes fail, and the train breaks in two. Helen, on a road parallel to the tracks, leaps onto a flat car, runs forward, informs the train crew what has happened, and captures the crooks.

Rose Blake, daughter of the ranch foreman, is in love with Tom, the cook, and her father disapproves of the match. Blake finally discharges Tom, and the boys become disgusted when they try to prepare their own meals. Disguised as a young lady, Tom arrives at the ranch, where he is engaged by Blake as a cook.

Alice receives an invitation from her grandfather, who is the minister of a small country church, to pay him a visit, which invitation she accepts. Mandy is loved by Jed, but her affections are with the deacon.

John Morrison, Wall Street financier, is in the habit of bringing home to his wife daily a bunch of beautiful roses. Delevan, a recognized Money King, meets Helen, the financier's daughter, upon whom he seems to immediately exert a hypnotic influence. She becomes infatuated with him.

When Colonel Archer, the commanding officer of the military post, refuses to lend money to his second-in-command, Captain Waring, Waring obtains the money from Brent Lindsay, from the nearby mining town, in exchange for his promissory note. Both Waring and Lindsay court Floyd Bingham, the daughter of a retired colonel, but Floyd learns that Lindsay is involved with Queen, a dancing girl.

Pierre Vignol, an artist wintering in Arizona, is bitten by a snake. He is taken by his friend, Tom Hornby, to Padre Francisco, who prescribes for the bite. Pierre, at the request of Tom, returns to his cabin and Tom takes care of him. Later Tom discovers a tube in Lost River. This proves to be a painting and Pierre takes it to Padre Francisco. The Padre reads him an interesting history of Fr. Bartolomeo. founder of the Mission, and of how the painting came to be discovered in Lost River, for it had been thrown there by a monk when the Mission was attacked by the Indians, owing to the abduction of the Chief's daughter by a villainous Spaniard. Tom takes the painting to New York where he sells it and gives the money to the wife of Tom, who has been too poor to bring her and the baby to Arizona.

A young man's sweetheart calls upon him to retrieve some incriminating love letters, but it all turns out to be a joke.

Nekhludoff, a Russian nobleman serving on a jury, discovers that the young girl on trial, Katusha, is someone he once seduced and abandoned and that he himself bears responsibility for reducing her to crime. He sets out to redeem her and himself in the process.

Ben Anderson, factor of the trading station, impatient with his daughter Anne's coquetries, calls all the trappers to him and promises to wed her to the one who brings back the most valuable catch of furs in the spring. Anne fancies herself in love with Henri Levesnue, a Frenchman. So when he is reported to have brought in the biggest prize she is delighted. But the following day, Joe Eagle, a quarter-breed, reaches the station with twice Henri's catch, Ben insists that Anne marry Joe, but she swears she never could become the wife of the French Indian, and because he really loves her, Joe, who has overheard her protestations, hides half his furs under his cabin floor. Anne is married to Henri, but in a few months is very unhappy. He is a heavy drinker; he neglects her, and at last, being penniless, he steals a bale of furs from the station. The factor sets Joe to catch the thief.

A lieutenant signals the flagship to destroy an enemy chateau.

Vicky pays a visit to her uncle's ranch in the west, and tells the cowboys that she could not love a man who is not an athlete. Tom and Sid, two of the cowboys, thereupon practice physical culture.

Royal Macklin, a cadet at WEst Point, is discharged for a misdemeanor, and the father of Beatrice, Macklin's sweetheart, order her to break the engagement. Macklin goes to Honduras, in the midst of a revolution, and joins the Patriot army of General LaGuerre in the fight against Alvarez and his rebels. Macklin proves his valor in battle and saves the life of General Laguerre. But Beatrice and her father, having found that Macklin was innocent of the charge that caused his dismissal, are in Honduras and have been captured by Alvarez.

A man returns from the colonies in time to save his Cockney parents.

Jean, a clam digger finds a treasure map. He races against his girl Marie's father and his rival to find the treasure, ultimately rescuing the girl and securing the gold.

Judit kills her first child because the father left them. She returns to a previous suitor, Simon. Each year their child dies. The rabbi says this happens because she killed her first child and forbids her to kiss her baby till it gets married.

Sweedie gets a job as mop artist in a hotel. She starts out from home encumbered with baggage and a pet dog of uncertain ancestry. Arrived at the hotel, she is given two pails and a mop and she starts to work.

Reflecting the plot of Charles Gounod's opera, Faust, an old man, sits unhappy in his study. Méphistophélès materializes and offers a devil's bargain - youth and vigor in exchange for Faust's soul. Faust accepts and instantly transforms into a young man. The two go out on the town, and Faust lays eyes on Marguerite, a virgin whose brother Valentin is her protector. Valentin goes to war, leaving Marguerite in the care of his friend Siébel and under the watchful eye of his neighbor, Marthe. Faust courts Marguerite while Méphistophélès chats with Marthe. Seduction, loss of reputation, pregnancy, and tragedy follow.

Broncho works for a despicable land grabber who treats his help like a brute. The men finally plot to lynch the land grabber. Broncho races on his horse ahead of them and tells him of the plot.

Molly, an Irish girl just hired by a New York newspaper, is assigned as a test a chain interview of celebrities that must be accomplished within a set amount of time. She goes through innumerable paths and obstacles to achieve the goal.

A professor seeks to prove life after death by reviving a dead body.

Francesca Brabaut, who married an artist against her father's advice, regrets her decision when her husband Antoine, in debt, sends her to his misanthropic uncle to plead for money.

Gertie enjoys a peaceful day at the park when two men take a shine to her: a mustachioed villain and a malevolent Little Tramp-knockoff. The two pursue Gertie, while she plays hard-to-get. When her sweetheart shows up, the chase is on.

Andy of the Royal Mounted and another trooper are both in love with a little school teacher, who shows the light of knowledge to the children of the settlers in a tiny Canadian hamlet. The school teacher favors Andy's suit and the other trooper is correspondingly despondent. He loses gracefully because Andy is his best friend, but his trouble preys on him. He goes into a saloon, gets drunk and is caught by his colonel and discharged from the service. Later, he shoots a gambler in a brawl and while making his getaway, rescues the school teacher from death when her horse runs away.

A cowboy advertises for a wife. A shop girl in Chicago responds, and he travels there to see her. Once he gets there, however, she changes her mind. Ashamed to return home empty-handled, the cowboy uses a mannequin in a woman's dress to fool his friends into thinking he has a wife.

Impoverished Molly Hanlon is befriended by crooked gambler Lee Kirk, she marries him in a phony ceremony. While frequenting Kirk's gambling den, Molly meets Miles Rand, the dissolute son of Judge Rand, whose obvious attraction for her encourages Kirk to swindle him out of his money. Penniless, Miles accepts a loan from Molly and returns East to study law. On the day that Molly learns that her marriage is not legal, the gambling den burns down and Kirk is presumed dead. After escaping with Kirk's money, Molly goes East where she encounters Miles, now a district attorney. In spite of the objections of Judge Rand, Molly accepts Miles's proposal, but after Kirk arrives in town, she calls off the engagement. When Kirk enters her apartment through a window, Molly kills him in a panic and is arrested for murder. The still faithful Miles defends her in court, and after her acquittal, she confesses her past and reunites with her old love.

Inventor George Grant and his partner, financier John Benson, accept an offer of $200,000 for the rights to an invention. After Grant breaks up a fight in a bar between drunken Dave Wilson and an old man reprimanding him, Dave is told by his mother to apologize to Grant. He meets Benson, who witnessed the fight, outside Grant's apartment and tells him his purpose, but during Dave's conversation with Grant, Grant suddenly drops dead. The police find Dave hiding, and after a pistol is found outside and Benson tells them about the fight but says he knew nothing about Dave's apology, Dave is convicted of murder and electrocuted.

Two romantic rivals play a game of pool for the hand of their lady love. W.C. Field's debut film.

A group of boys are playing baseball on a playground, and one of them hits the ball over the fence, breaking the window of a house belonging to a professor. He calls in a repairman, who arrives to fix the window and is admitted by the professor's pretty maid. Attracted to her and wanting to see her again, after he fixes the window he sneaks back to the house that night and breaks it again, hoping she'll call to have him come out and fix it. She does, but it doesn't turn out exactly the way he had hoped.

Confronting Helen at the Lone Point Switch Tower, Denning and his pal imprison the girl in a clothes closet and then steal everything of value. In making their getaway, the crooks accidentally upset a lantern and set the tower afire. Helen, by picking the lock in the door with a hairpin, barely escapes death in the flames.

A world-weary mother, penniless and widowed, leaves her starving infant in the tonneau of Broncho Billy's limousine. Broncho Billy, a rich man, discovers the infant in his car and, although delighted with the "novelty," feels in an awkward position. The child is cared for, however, and in spite of the ridicule heaped upon him by his club friends, Broncho Billy is big-hearted and rears the child to maturity. The girl is about nineteen years old when she falls in love with a nice sort of a fellow who wants to marry her. Broncho Billy himself has just about decided to ask her to marry him when they come to him for his blessing.

Bill Evers, a gambling house keeper, is in reality the "Desert Scourge," an outlaw.

Jules, the son of French General Bleriot, agrees to give a masked blackmailer his father's secret military papers when threatened with exposure of his gambling debts. Masked, Jules steals the papers, but during a struggle with his father, Jules receives a knife wound in his arm.
