Wout is a competition cyclist, a mountain climber, and a student at the film academy; Joost is an artist with a substantial track record. This film tells the story of their difficult relationship, seen from the perspective of the younger brother, who is not afraid to dish up a good share of self-mockery. “My brother thinks that once in a lifetime, everyone should take apart an engine block,” we hear him say in the voiceover. Next, we see Wout grapple with a towel and a pile of engine parts, while his older brother irritably lectures him from a distance. When Wout scales the slopes of the Himalayas with his camera, he comes to the point of making an important decision about his life.

“If a lion could speak, we wouldn't be able to understand it”, said wittgenstein. we look at animals with the same curiosity, as if we'd lost each other's memory. a thin veil of incomprehension separates us and casts us into a deep melancholy. there they are, with their hair, feathers and scales, survivors from a fabulous world, mythical heroes of edifying stories and phantasmagorical material of our dreams. over the past two centuries, we have begun to study, classify and naturalize them, at the same time as their disappearance has begun. in museums, their remains have accumulated, the tangible form of our view of them and its history. what could be more natural? museums are the place for this. we observe the passing of time, that which precedes us and that which is yet to come.

Singapore GaGa is a 55-minute paean to the quirkiness of the Singaporean aural landscape. It reveals Singapore's past and present with a delight and humour that makes it a necessary film for all Singaporeans. We hear buskers, street vendors, school cheerleaders sing hymns to themselves and to their communities. From these vocabularies (including Arabic, Latin, Hainanese), a sense of what it might mean to be a modern Singaporean emerges. This is Singapore's first documentary to have a cinema release.
