Cinematic Era: 2002 Vintage

Following on from their 2001 release, DOPUMENTARY, Kottonmouth Kings return with this new collection, featuring behind-the-scenes and live footage. Still inhaling as much weed as they can get their hands on, see the Kings smoke themselves across American stages, and also put across a strong case for legalization. Included here is the song "Full Throttle" from their long-awaited new album Rollin' Stoned."

Max and Emmy, best-loved siblings of the sandbox set, dust off their dragon scale a crowd-pleasing five times for Don't Give Up. From a parent's perspective, that adds up to five recitations of the magic rhyme to come back home until next time, which equals the same count of tricky life lessons tucked into a child's belt. From preschoolers' vantage point, it means a quintuple scoop of dragon play dates amid the show's sherbet-hued scenery.

Toshiya, an aspiring screenwriter, notices a woman who appears to be a married woman in the apartment building across the street from his apartment window. Intrigued by the somewhat melancholic Ayumi, Toshiya, despite having a girlfriend, begins secretly peeking into Ayumi's room. One day, while peeking into her room, he sees Ayumi straddling her husband, who is inside, and beginning to desire him. It's as if she's deliberately showing off to Toshiya…

An eight-minute film combining live-action footage and stop-motion animation. Guided by the artist’s sensibility that finds cuteness in creepy things and beauty in the sculpted form of animals, this work presents a collage of models of animals such as fawns and flower-eating elephants and objects such as pipes and water.

8mm is a reproductive medium that fundamentally cannot be reproduced, and the filmmaker relates to the medium as through working in sculpture. This piece takes the search for these sculptural elements to its extremes. Edited from differing viewpoints, the film is patched together in sections of a few frames from top to bottom and side to side; a convolvulus and the seashore meet at that very moment light is shone on it.

Produced in collaboration with residents of the Las Cuevas neighbourhood in his home town (Huéscar). Valeriano is the non-gypsy who seeks their cooperation by inviting them to say Unamuno’s famous phrase before the camera – “Spain pains me” – which sums up the enlightened and sceptical spirit of the Generation of ’98, with the intention of extrapolating that phrase to a context of social exclusion that comes to an end when a Romani woman, with a great deal of transgressive humour, and at the same time natural due to the absence of bourgeois norms in this community, transfers Unamuno’s sentiment from the public to the personal by uttering, amidst the laughter of those around her, the phrase that gives the video its title and which shifts the crux of Spain’s problem to the very heart of her community, at which point disco music bursts in whilst the camera pans across the caves dug into the earth, where the natural actors of this work dwell.

The second major operation for the 101st Airborne Division was Operation Market Garden in September 1944. In "On the BG Track", Krassimir Terziev brings together footage from Western mainstream flms that mention Bulgaria, Bulgarians and “Bulgarianness”. The dialogue varies from typical clichés to strange attempts to attach “nationality” to exoticism. Of course, these samples merely contribute to creating a mythology from the unknown. In this way, with a slightly bitter sense of humour, the author comments on the tendency to present the unknown as something exotic, which is not only characteristic of Bulgaria and “Bulgarianness”, but also to any kind of difference, or otherness."

Heavens Above is a spiritual journey presented in moving images, narrative text, music and song. Only the stars in the heavens and in planetariums connect a man and a woman, traveling separately. Though they travel on parallel paths, they are destined to meet as the Sun must eventually embrace the Moon. The two characters seek to explore the mystique of space and the aesthetics of planetariums, as the physical heavens become their gateway to spiritual salvation.

The ultimate visual expression lies in the development process. A darkroom, a dark room, the feeling of groping around. A buffer zone where developer and fixer mix together. The image sometimes appears and sometimes doesn't. It is also a ghost zone where ghosts appear out of nowhere.

In Ghost Reader C.H., AnnLee, the virtual apparition from the “No Ghost Just a Shell” project, reads aloud Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, weaving a haunting meditation on identity, technology, and presence.

A satirical mockumentary depicts the farewell of a young man named Vitia as he leaves for Italy. It's unclear what in this story is true and what is not - the filmmaker manages to speak about serious things in a seemingly lighthearted way.

Reenactments of dangerous fugitives that are portrayed by actors, interspersed with on-camera interviews.

A scene showing a soldier who, having committed a mistake, was being corrected by his senior, from the film, The New Guard Under Neon Lights, was taken out and re-edited; parts of the scene are repeated and some dialogue and movements are slowed down, but the entire scene with the complete dialogue has been retained in the video clip.

The project that began as a documentary about the Korea-Japan World Cup was slowly transforming into something very different. "The Coldest Day of the Year" is the result of the unpredictable and synchronicity. A documentary that explores situations and characters who lived together during that critical moment in the country: when the dismay of the Argentine national team's defeat in the World Cup turned into horror following the Avellaneda Massacre in which Maximiliano Kosteki and Darío Santillán died.

According to pop culture mythology, Paris Hilton “invented” the selfie in 2006. In factual terms, Uber and its rideshare model was officially launched in 2010. Mare Tralla’s video precedes - and reflects - both of these cultural landmarks that have since become nouns. In this piece, no words are needed: a woman rides in the backseat, entranced by pulsing rhythms. Through a double-layered image - or perhaps an altered state of mind - we follow the movements of a fleeting moment inside a car.

In this work, the echo of Chornobyl appears literally as a stage for a "porn film". The main characters are a couple dressed in silver anti-radiation suits, striking erotic poses and imitating sexual intercourse against the backdrop of apocalyptic views of Prypiat. Grey high-rise buildings, abandoned attractions, and the city itself, which by its very appearance excludes hope for any kind of life, resonate with the figures of two lovers who, in their desire to be together, only produce a tragicomic effect of powerlessness.

Farzad, who lived in London as a Freemason, mysteriously disappears. Farzad’s son, Faramak comes to Iran to bury his father’s body, but in Iran, he encounters a strange and unfamiliar atmosphere. He also discovers that his father had a wife whom Faramak cannot initially accept. However, gradually Faramak connects with her and realizes that she is a famous film actress who was not active during his father’s lifetime, but now her films and photos are being circulated again.
