Collection of cartoon anecdotes summons the small-town world of the turn of the century, condensed into a single day, with ‘Czech’ good humour. The mosaic-like short evokes locations of the artist’s childhood, the Fin de Siècle milieu of Sopron through the glittering imagination of the graphic artist director, where the stationmaster salutes the rising sun, and the train driver associates himself with a mermaid in his bath, who he caught that day in the lake.

HABIT is an autobiographical documentary that follows the current history of the AIDS epidemic along several trajectories. The organizing structure is built around the daily routine of the videomaker -- a veteran AIDS activist in the U.S., and a person who has been living with AIDS for over ten years. As the videomaker moves through his day, attending to mundane errands, eating, taking pills, having conversations with friends (some who have diseases like AIDS and Breast Cancer, and others who are healthy), memories of a recent trip to South Africa reoccur and interrupt the routine. In South Africa, the videomaker meets people with AIDS, fighting to get access to the same life saving drugs that he depends on to survive. It is estimated that there are over four million people infected with HIV in South Africa. The vast majority of people with AIDS in Africa do not have access to medical treatment.

When Rachel Raney and David Murray set out to create a film on suburban sprawl and the rise of “McTowns,” they never imagined the stories they’d find. The result is Livemore, part documentary, part fairytale, part mystery, and mostly comedy: a portrait of a formerly bucolic suburb threatened by rapid growth and change and the handful of eccentric old-timers struggling to hold on to what makes their piece of small-town America unique.

It's Magic Time follows the vicissitudes in and around 'multi-channel experience marketing company' Magic Minds, brainchild of the irrepressibly optimistic ('On moratorium day, I play the piano') entrepreneur Erik Bartels. In a time when many good digital things must come to an end, this company converted its office for 3.6 million euros. Despite 'experience domes', a roof club and workout facilities, the relaxed Magic Minds atmosphere is soon replaced by rigorous commercialism. Sales targets and utilisation rates are not met, creditors are on their doorstep, and moneylender Nesbic is making things hot for them. After the first round of dismissals, the company gets in a free fall that leads to the verge of bankruptcy. Filmmaker Marco Zuilhof registered the developments at first hand. Negotiations, quarrels, dismissals and Bartels's fits of rage: Zuilhof was present. This makes It's Magic Time a stirring and disconcertingly concrete drama in a world of brand values and hot air.

In the early 2000's, Israeli and Palestinian negotiators nearly reached a peace agreement. Within weeks, the opportunity vanished. Frontline examines the faltering quest for peace in "Shattered Dreams of Peace: The Road from Oslo" - a film by Charles Enderlin, a Franco-Israeli journalist, specializing in the Middle East and Israel - beginning with the 1995 assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. The two-and-a-half-hour documentary traces the peace process through years of negotiations, with new footage of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and interviews with key figures on both sides.

"When Voices Rise..." tells the important, but little-known story of dismantling segregation in the polite society that was Bermuda in the 1950s. Working in secret, the Progressive Group organized the 1959 Theatre Boycott to end segregation in movie theatres in Hamilton. Context is provided by those who protested against segregation and the limited franchise earlier in Bermuda by authoring a "Secret Document" that analyzed the social problems of the island. The film also features a rare interview conducted in London, England with Kingsley Tweed-a powerful, public figure during the boycott that changed the island forever. -- Chris Campbell
