Cinematic Era: 2000 Vintage

It is taking decades for Canada to come to terms with its history in the Arctic, and with its relationship to all its indigenous people. “Kikkik” is the story of government mistakes and neglect, of starvation, murder, freezing death, but, in the end, a kind of justice that helps restore our faith in human decency. In 1958, the Inuit woman Kikkik was charged with murder and criminal negligence leading to the death of her child. Her trial and our visit back to the place and to Kikkik’s children confront us with a legacy that’s still a challenge for Canada.

But her stepmother (Debbie D) learns of her plot and sees a way to get even for her stepdaughter’s previous behavior. Debbie forces Tina to strip, ties her up, and puts a dog collar around her neck to keep her in line. Then when Tina tries to escape, Debbie forces her to put the dog’s favorite ball in her mouth and then it’s taped in place. But Debbie’s accomplice has his own plans and leaves both women tied back to back, completely naked, with the gas turned on!

Georgian-born Israeli artist Meir Pichhadze never let emotion run his life. He hated nostalgia, but in the spring of 1999, he returned to Georgia with his friend Aaron and the spirit of his dark-eyed sister Makvalla. She died by suicide a year after arriving in Israel and it is said she died of longings for her homeland. It turns out that nostalgia was in fact simmering inside Meir and it led him back to Georgia to explore some old wounds.

We try to avoid the supposed failure explained by Jean Mitry and to propose a new way with the hope that the score of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata can be literally applied to the verticality of celluloid. Since it is perhaps impossible that cinema can grasp what ephemeral instant music is, let us picture the madness and ecstasy of a row of musical notes trapped onto any format. We could add or classify this work within “lettrist cinema,” but in that case could we not be referring to “integrist cinema”? For this recording the artist received a Latin Grammy nomination on 2001 for Best Male Pop Vocal Album and also a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album on 43rd Grammy Awards[1]. It includes two songs never recorded before by the artist: "Y" and "La Bikina", which were released as singles.

Incited by Lunettes, Myope creates (in the same city and climate, but in another dimension) two characters: Pierrot and Agathe. To a certain degree, these two are a disjointed response to Myope, Lunettes, neighbors, and distant representatives. It's very hot. The inhabitants are interested in fountains and shadows. They build cool cabins, hanging curtains over the balcony balustrades. Asphalt sticks to the soles of sandals and when the wind blows, the canopies flap above the café terraces.
