Cinematic Era: 2000 Vintage

A short animated film by Leeds Animation Workshop which illustrates problems faced by young people at school as a result of gender stereotyping and bullying. Classmates Darren and Sharon are each keeping a video diary. The results show them the different worlds girls and boys live in, and the different anxieties they experience.

An abstract film derived from coloured inks applied onto clear super 8; sprocket holes from different gauges of film were used as stencils, leaving behind hard-edged rectangular shapes amongst the swirling patterns of ink.

An orphanage located somewhere out of the way in the forest. It is a strange house - camels, llamas and other exotic animals walk on it, reality mixes with fantasy. One of the pupils, Krzyś Pirek, fell ill again. Lying in bed, he tells his friend his story.

Animator Wayne Traudt creates a striking visual rendition of renowned Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's vocals as he performs 'Tracery,' composed by Michael Brooks. As Fateh Ali Khan's voice performs agile pyrotechnics, Traudt invents a visual experience to match. Together, the music and the animation resonate. The body movements echo the phrasing of the music with grace, evoking life and breath, the universal rhythms to which we all dance.

Crime Scene Clean-Up goes behind the scenes into a world few have had to enter – the bloody aftermath of a traumatic crime scene. After the cops and coroner have come and gone, leaving their fingerprint dust and discarded gloves behind, what happens then? Who cleans up after death? Meet Ron Gospodarski, a man with unusual insight into a crime scene. Ron's business is to clean up after death, a business born out of the concerns of blood tainted by TB, Hepatitis and AIDS. Follow Ron on his daily journey through New York City.

Is it possible to film miracles? The camera shows pilgrims, who watch a window of a school in a small town in the East of Poland, where several people already believed to have seen the Virgin Mary.

Desert and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Rams III is a series of fantastic hunts throughout the past three years (1997 - 1999) and includes two years of hunting scenes from Alberta Canada's auction tag. You'll see George Harms take a state record desert ram in California, and a world record CA Bighorn with a bow. Bighorn 3 also follows Gary Hansen's #3 state record Idaho Bighorn hunt, and through Oregon for a CA Bighorn. Mark Almgreen takes a great desert sheep with a muzzleloader, Ann Palmer shoots a great desert ram in Arizona, and we'll see a pistol hunt that completes all four methods of hunting. With two additional Bighorn scenes, Bighorn III highlights nine outstanding hunts and closely focuses on field judging rams between 160 and 208 Boone and Crockett points.

The discomfort stems from being oneself. The clips included here explore who we are and who we imagine ourselves to be. They are experiments in appearances, examining the use of artifice to enhance life or conceal it. It is a reflection on moral dislocation, hypocrisy, autonomous dreams, self-hatred, and self-destruction—the act of repeatedly killing our dreams.

In Warp, Steina makes use of her two favourite features of the Image/ine software, written by Tom Demeyer. The first feature – ‘warp’ – is a time delay software, which scans one line at the time, leaving the rest of the image motionless. With the second feature – ‘slit scan’ – a point or line in a continuously moving image is captured and streamed forward.

There is a planet near Earth where strange creatures live. They look like birds and they eat meteorites. Although their behaviours seem strange and completely different from ours, we have a lot more in common than it might seem at first.

Out of the fascination with astronomy, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the brightly lit highways of Belgium (you can even see them from outer space!), The Sisters of Light is a fable about light and its mysteries. The title also suggests a homage to two of the founders of the moving image. Two friends—Stella, an astronomer, and Lucia, a salesgirl in a lamp store—who know each other only through correspondence, are separated by death. Lucia, the surviving friend, drives off at night, heading for the Belgium of twinkling motorways, searching for her Stella’s angel which should have become Lucia’s guardian angel. With an empty heart, she drives, accompanied by strange light phenomena around her (UFO's? angels?) to find enlightenment around her loss.

It started when Mary Schenley donated land for a beautiful wooded park. Soon Andrew Carnegie built a great library and museums nearby. There was a grand hotel, a spectacular greenhouse, and a beloved old ballpark Forbes Field. We visit the Bug Rooms, the murals and Music Hall at the Carnegie Museums. We race through Schenley Park, stop at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, and visit shops along Craig St.

Pieces of James: An Enquiry Into the Art and Life of James Manning is the story of the discovery of all the fragments that comprised James’ life. The homoerotic imagery and huge fresco-style still lifes garnered him posthumous success in galleries across the country and an honourary degree from the internationally recognized Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Young’s exploration paints a life of creativity, elusiveness, pain and challenges of being gay or lesbian in our time.

This film is built as a funeral ceremony ; it conveys an investigation on the underworld. In an environment of devastated telluric forces (one-hundred-year-old trees from the Fontainebleau forest were uprooted by the storm of 1999 winter). There is a superb officiating priest in a black tuxedo. The film refers to the everlasting cycle of death, the extraction of a corpse by a young nymph remind’s us of Caravaggio’s paintings, this ceremony is full of ablutions and jewellery; a flowy, golden path to a wonderful mirror through which the miracle of resurrection takes place.

Found footage exploring public and private space, organized formally as a sonata, centered around work and issues of class: the divisions between home and public, owners and workers, saturation and flow, structure and improvisation.

At the height of the Vietnam War, in 1969, Swedish filmmaker PeÅ Holmquist traveled to South East Asia to make a film on a Hmong village leader named Lao-Tong and the Hmong. This film documents Holmquist’s return after 30 years. With new material filmed in Thailand, Laos, and the United States, and incorporating scenes from the 1969 documentary, the film shows how much has changed, and what has happened to the Hmong, both in Thailand and Laos, and in the United States.

"We Will Live Forever" is the search for traces of the destroyed Jewish culture of Wilna. While the gentile Viennese band "gojim" looks for the musical traces of this extinguished culture, we get a very personal view of the era through the eyes of three witnesses of this time. On behalf of the many who can no longer speak, they tell stories about childhood, youth and resistance in and around the ghetto of Wilna.

An incredible resource for railroad and history buffs, Eastern Railroading looks at historic trains and railroads in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania Amish country, West Virginia, and Illinois in order to understand the emergence of railroads as a binding force in American history. With the help of interviews with historians and railroad experts, legends and folklore are explored as well as the mechanics and maintenance of locomotives. The collection of working locomotives in Pennsylvania's Amish country are particularly fun to see maintained and operated under 19th-century conditions. Special segments include passenger train history, the Pacific Railroad Act, commuter train operations, and the controls on Amtrak's EMD 103 super locomotive.

After six years with the Marines, Max Finister returns to the tough streets of the Bronx, only to find his childhood sweetheart, Lanette, and her little sister, Binita, entangled with New York's most dangerous drug lord. When Max moves the girls upstate and out of harm's way, he ignites the kingpin's fury for revenge. And in order to face the increasing poverty of the people, politicians who have abandoned them are said to have promulgated an Article 15 proclaiming: "Citizens, get out of the mess yourselves!" But as the social situation disintegrated even more, a second Article 15 was apparently added and immediately adopted: "Citizens get out of the mess all over again!" Article 15A expresses the loser's triumphant laughter. In this contemporary fable, three security guards reveal their lowly nature while talking leisurely in the midday heat about public service, corruption, and back pay.
