Cinematic Era: 2000 Vintage

Documentary made as part of the exhibition “Materiais de Construção” (FCG, 1998). The exhibition's curator, Jorge Molder, and the participating artists, Markus Raetz and Pieter Laurens Mol, are interviewed. Topics such as the artists' biography and the works presented are covered. Includes images from the exhibition (CAM Gallery and Hall).

Two programs were created in OpenGL/C++ to generate the images, along with a custom animatable font. The first handled the streaming text background. It increases the rate at which letters are typed, motion-blurring fast images. The second program generates the running man. Random letters are drawn (according to specified animation parameters), and their color intensity is determined by the pixels covered in the Muybridge images. A sequence of images is read in, and animation parameters are applied to the animatable font.

In a Nigerien village there lived a poor family who found it difficult to provide for daily needs and above all to overcome hunger. This village located several kilometers from the school will not allow the children to go to class on time and to follow the lessons in the same way as the other students. In this atmosphere of daily misery, the corrupt power pays very little attention to the problems of grassroots populations and community social services are almost absent. Because of a cursed sum demanded from school by the teacher, the young girl can no longer go to school. On the other side nothing was possible to save their eldest daughter beaten to death by her husband, because they don't have enough to pay for the doctor's prescription. With sincerity and directness, this portrait of a needy family criticizes all the consequences of a badly managed country.

What happens if a man takes away his favorite doll.

In these short episodes, created while she was in Japan, Lucas is seen within a playful yet alienating landscape of global pop culture and consumerism. Snatches of radio mix with video games and sales pitches on the soundtrack, as we catch Lucas's image, distorted by surveillance cameras or fragmented by the odd angles of electronics store display monitors. In each episode, the human body threatens to recede beyond visibility, submerged in a hissing, buzzing tide of media saturation.

The woman, going under the name of Ally Farson, is responsible for the known deaths of six people. A seventh person, related by evidence to the crimes, is reportedly missing and presumed dead. The murders took place from June 3rd, 1999 to August 9th, 1999 in Los Angeles. The missing person, whose name has not been released at this time, was last seen on June 3rd, 1999. A female film student takes her camera and a cameraman on her personal killing spree in Orange County California. Shot (documentary style) you enter the mind of a psychotic girl and her totally dysfunctional family.

Adam Killer exploits a bug in the first-person shooter videogame, Half Life, to create a glitched, bloody disarray. The player's only option is to violently attack the main character, Adam, who appears in multiples in a white field.

Although there is no clear narrative as such, this cut-out animation has a fable-like quality. This film explores the life of the shaman-master Tomor, at his centre in Ulaan Baatar.

The stories in The Habits of New Norcia are told by former Western Australian Aboriginal child 'inmates' of the New Norcia Benedictine Mission who were separated from their families in the 1940s, 50s and 60s and confined in this "orphanage without orphans". In recent decades the New Norcia Monastery has been packaged as one of the State's leading cultural tourist attractions. "A unique blend of Spanish architecture, European art treasures and pioneer history," "Monks, Music & Mystery," "New Norcia, Australia's only monastic town," the brochures announce. Aboriginal testimony in the film challenges this revised and sanitised history. The documentary provides damming evidence of the continuing violence of the Mission against its victims by deliberate omission of their experience in the New Norcia museum, guided tours, art gallery and promotions — an omission that represents a cruel and wounding cover-up.
