The old miller was going to marry his only daughter, the beautiful Marika. Grooms are good as a selection, but how to choose the most worthy of them? And then the old man came up with a task for them: to bring a golden apple from a distant island located at the other end of a huge lake. Whoever copes with the assignment will become Marika's husband. The grooms raced to get an apple, but it turned out that not everyone was allowed to approach the magic apple tree. Only a person with a pure soul and a kind heart will be able to pluck the cherished fruit.

The film starts in Nalaikh where old Mongolchaan is one of the many former miners who - after the closure of the mine - continues digging for coal in order to survive. Despite the extremely severe working conditions, he perseveres to support his children. Mongolchaan sells his coal to Basandorj, a middleman between the coal pits and the power stations in the city. Basandorj delivers the coal to a power station where young Erdenetsetseg is in charge. Despite the harsh environment, she enjoys her life and work. The electricity produced by the power plant enlightens blind Amarjarkhal's apartment. Ever since she moved from Nalaikh to the capital she makes a living as a writer and performer of popular songs.

It is only after they uncover a strange horned skull amongst the artifacts that they become aware of the evil they have unleashed. Getting out of the woods becomes a nightmare for the two men.

Although many of Sala’s works address personal histories—his own and those of others—their themes of trauma, loss, and recovery are universal. Using tropes of both documentary and fictional filmmaking, Nocturnes (1999) approaches these themes in an uneasy exploration of insomnia and personal isolation. The film offers a brief but telling glimpse into the lives and psyches of two men Sala met while studying art in Turcoing, France: Jacques, who collects and obsessively cares for thousands of fish, and Denis, who copes with disturbing memories of his service as a United Nations peacekeeper in Bosnia by playing violent video games.

The family's life changes radically after the arrival of the grandmother. A supporter of physical exercise, getting up early and going to church, she terrorizes her surroundings. After an unsuccessful attempt to get rid of a troublesome guest, the family decides to find the grandmother a fiancé.

The challenge of the "Truth and Reconciliation Commission" set up by Nelson Mandela in South Africa is to achieve a truly democratic society. Composed of 17 members and Desmond Tutu, this Commission will be relayed throughout the country by groups called "Khulumani" (literally: "Free the Word"). For a little over a year, it will invite victims, perpetrators and witnesses of apartheid to tell the truth about the past. The filmmakers have been authorized to follow this incredible process, which should lead to the re-founding of the nation, for its entire duration. The film focuses on the collective character of the Commission, crossed by ethical, political and philosophical questions, as well as on a few characters, victims and executioners, linked by a common history. They are filmed in their interrogations and their steps to re-establish a link between a past and a possible future.
