This documentary features two programs. First, St. Clare of Assisi reveals the extraordinary life of St. Clare, a woman who reached the highest summits of Christian mysticism, who knew how to defend her decisions alone and who built a social reality that still challenges the centuries. Along with medieval harmonies composed by Oscar-winning musicians, the exquisite photography explores all of the sacred places in and around Assisi that characterize the life of Clare and that of Francis. The testimony of a Poor Clare in the 40-minute documentary, moreover, exemplifies the figure of Clare in today's world. The second program, included as a bonus, is Poor Clares: A Hidden Presence. More than twenty thousand women today follow the example of Clare of Assisi in monasteries scattered throughout the world - the cloistered convent, a city in prayer and a hidden presence with a love with reserve for all of humanity.

During a stay in Vienna, Hafif was stuck by store window mannequins, which fascinated her with their highly artificial quality. The discovery inspired her to create a series of photographs of the figures. Standing in the street, the artist captured them in their ‘natural habitat,’ which is to say, behind a pane of glass. Folding the surrounding scene into the pictures, the reflections in the windows refract our gaze at the figures. On a semiotic level, urban architecture and the female body blend into each other. To expand this photographic series into the film Vienna Suite, Hafif resorted to a very basic device: she recorded the photographs with a static video camera and edited the footage to produce a sequence of ‘scenes.’
Chance Meetings 1: In these short silent films (each is about 30 seconds long), chance encounters play the central role. In a fixed and immobile frame, two men meet. This does not result in any actual contact; the two men only look at each other. This almost pedestrian and intriguing phenomenon repeatedly unfolds without giving away its mystery. Chance Meetings 2: In these short film loops (each about 1 minute long), the ‘gaze’ is key; in a repetitive motion, the viewer is confronted with the gaze of ‘the other’. In a series of concatenated images, this gaze quickly takes on an almost provocative character. This sometimes evokes feelings of confrontation, as if the viewer is actually being addressed.

Filmed in Hi-8, A Mother's Lament recounts the tragedy of Shima Choudhury, a young garment factory worker picked up by the police while traveling with her boyfriend. 16-year-old Shima was allegedly gang raped by four policemen later that night. She was then sent to prison for "safe custody" where she died under mysterious circumstances. Shima's case has become a landmark issue in the Bangladeshi women's struggle against institutional oppression and abuse of power. The case is now in appeal at the high court. Rather than presenting the story as an investigative piece, the video attempts to explore the issue from a personal perspective - the sense of disempowerment and hopelessness the family undergoes as it struggles to cope with the girl's incarceration leading to her death. Interviews with the family are joined with interviews of a cross-section of people, as they voice their concerns regarding the state of human rights in Bangladesh today.
