SALUTE, the first installment of Bruce Baillie's proposed three-part final film, MEMOIRS OF AN ANGEL, chronicles (in collage form) the legendary filmmaker's time in the Navy and beyond. The subsequent installments, NIGHT and LIGHT, are still works-in-progress. "A few of the thematic elements... Introduction of the element of illusion (MY LAST MASQUERADE). Imagery of war [in the form of] documentary footage, film and the author recording himself, self-consciously, in uniform! One cannot here avoid an implicit reference to the Bhagavad Gita; the warrior Arjuna and Lord Krishna in Dharma combat on the battlefield as metaphor for the human dilemma in confrontation with the world of time/space, illusion of opposites [and the] attachment to the merely transient." - Marcel Joyeux, L'illumination

In the Drakensberg mountains of South Africa, the black eagle rules the skies. The solitary caracal is a night hunter and one of the most efficient cats on earth. The rival predators compete for the same prey. When an early spring brings the promise of abundance, a pair of black eagles takes a gamble. With a two month-old eaglet still on the nest, Emoyeni and Quatele mate again. For the first time ever recorded, black eagles attempt to breed twice in one season. The second clutch will be born as the summer grows hotter and hotter. The following winter, we return to find that nature has restored itself. Our pair of eagles is on the nest with not two but three newly hatched chicks. Last season, they were the first black eagles known to attempt double-brooding. Now, they are the first on record to have three chicks in one clutch. Emoyeni and Quatele are very ambitious birds.

On April 6, 1999, Chiapas' interim governor, Albores, ordered the state police to dismantle the autonomous Zapatista council of the San Andrés Sacamchén Municipality, which he had governed since 1995. Army troops and public security forces occupied the council headquarters and installed a PRI mayor. The following day, more than 3,000 indigenous peasants marched on the town of San Andrés, peacefully recaptured the government headquarters, and reinstated the elected officials. The Mexican army and security forces fled the town, driven out by unarmed citizens. This 11-minute video captures the power of organized civil society as thousands of indigenous civilians demonstrate community-rooted democracy. Since then, community members have monitored the government headquarters day and night to prevent further attacks by the governor.

The June 26, 1999, fight between Paulie Ayala and Johnny Tapia was set against a backdrop of stark contrasts. Tapia, the undefeated WBA bantamweight champion (46-0-2), was a flamboyant star known for his "Mi Vida Loca" persona and turbulent life outside the ring. Ayala (27-1), a disciplined but lesser-known southpaw, had failed in his only prior title shot in Japan—a fight unseen by U.S. audiences, which may have led Tapia’s team to underestimate him. The bout, held at Mandalay Bay, was initially overshadowed by a heavyweight undercard but became a clash of styles: Tapia’s slick boxing versus Ayala’s relentless pressure. Tensions flared at the weigh-in when Tapia shoved Ayala, foreshadowing an explosive encounter.

In the video De Doble Filo, Clemencia Echeverri highlights the intensity of catastrophes brought about by human beings‘ destructive capacity, which is akin to the power of natural forces. However, the momentum of the devastation generated by human groups and individuals assumes increasing proportions and does not seem to follow cycles of alternating construction and destruction. The image of the woman that unceasingly draws house after house, knowing that those will be razed an equal number of times by a rust-colored torrent of water, suggests as well the destruction of the family’s web, of the nucleus of larger communities.
