In 1978, Robakowski moved into a new flat in a newly-built high rise in the center of Łódź. That’s when he began filming the people and events he could see from his kitchen window. The film was made on the basis of a dozen or more hours of footage shot during 1978–1999. The artist filmed the front yard of his block of flats in a part of Łódź called “Manhattan”—a cluster of tall, cement housing buildings vaguely resembling New York’s skyscrapers. The images are accompanied by the artist’s commentary, which brings the viewer closer to his neighbors and family, including his then-wife, Małgorzata Potocka. The film comments on the gradual yet profound political and social transformations that took place in Poland over these two decades.

What kind of habits does one develop when confronted with extreme situations on a daily basis ? In a geriatric department, the management of this borderline state becomes the structuring element of everyday life. The staff focuse on technical gestures to keep bodies at bay. Nurses use a specialized vocabulary, which serves less to express a feeling than to domesticate the violence of it, reducing the disorder of emotions to a reduced number of formulas. Patients use devious means to assert their independence. A woman fiercely refuses to take a shower. This is an ultimate form of resistance, to feel that she still has decision-making power over her body. Raymond withdraws to an inner world. He creates stories about the objects he sees in his room, confusing past and present, dreams and reality.

In this stop-action animation, a mournful bride sits alone on her wedding night wringing her hands. The wood floor is unadorned, the organ music sorrowful. The imposing groom enters the room, she shudders, and he strikes her. Later that night, she walks down the grand staircase of this large manor house, past family portraits of past generations: she notices that in each the mum is pale, the father dominant, his hands tight around the shoulders and necks of his children, and the children have no mouths. She turns and runs back to her room to find a way to set free herself and someone else: what is this life-affirming action?

Based on his own video documentation, Atlas constructs a delirious montage of New York club performances from the late 1990s. Impersonators of pop-culture figures, including Martha Graham, Kurt Cobain giving a "final performance," and Sid Vicious lip-syncing to Nancy Sinatra, are emceed by two matronly (and bitingly sarcastic) upper-crust women. Featuring legendary drag, transgender, and queer artists, It's a Jackie Thing celebrates the flexibility of performance art's boundaries: "high" and "low" culture, "good" and "bad" taste, amateurism and professionalism, and, ultimately, gender and identity.

This is the story of time passing, at the slow pace of Ousmane Sow, and of time rushing by, from the birth of a work to its unveiling one spring day in Paris on the Pont des Arts. For a year, while preparing the exhibitions in Dakar and Paris, Béatrice Soulé witnessed the creation of Two Moon, Sitting Bull, Chief Gall, and Crazy Horse by Ousmane Sow—Sioux and Cheyenne chiefs who, gathered along the Little Bighorn River, won the most important Native American victory against the American army in 1868, a victory that led to the death of General Custer. In the intimacy of the sculptor's home in Dakar, a home itself a place of creation, she shares with us her emotion at seeing works emerge from the sand, works that seem to journey from death to life.

A documentary about the wondrous passion of Carmen Martinek, who takes movie theaters as her lovers.Carmen does a little of everything at Vienna's Schikaneder cinema: She cleans and caresses it, and runs the projector. She strokes its seats and even sleeps there after long nights at the bar. It is, she admits, just like being with a person you couldnŽt live without. Anja Salomonowitz made a quiet little film about Carmen, observing her as she moves through the empty theater, as she puts in only brief appearances at home and immediately returns to the base station. After being forced to watch as her last theater was transformed into a supermarket, Carmen considers movie theaters to be erotic but also endangered environments.

It documents the passing of the filmmaker’s father and the fateful historical changes of Hong Kong in the turmoil years of 1996-98. Personal and social events intertwined, destined to become parallel metaphors for each other. To record the personal is to make a testimony of time and space that is particular, lived as well as historical.
