Commissioned for the film event exibition on the subject of the "Apocalysm" in cinema, this found footage film is essentialy constructed around the strongly altered images of ball-trap sequences for a demonstration film on fire-arms, humorously juxtaposed to images of innocence illustrated by children type drawings on seasonal tales and by fragments of two advertisings films : one on a natural reservation in the Seychelles Islands; the other, a "cartoon", for raincoats, related to the biblical flood.

Ephtim experiences constant difficulties in balancing the family budget. Free medical care and lunches at a subsidised canteen are essential to his survival strategy. This portrait of a Bulgarian pensioner is presented in the context of a global hopelessness and a clearly felt nostalgia for the communist past.

It's Christmas. Mario, a forty-year-old unemployed grandfather who lives by his wits but has an equally chronic dream of becoming an actor, is hired as a caretaker (sixteen hours a day) of a grotesque nativity scene set up on the main street of Bari by a photographer who uses it as a backdrop for photographing children. For us, it's a great opportunity to make a documentary about him... But for Mario, too, we are an excellent opportunity to make his film, the dream he had in his drawer, the film about his life: we are his crew and he is the director! The result is a constant battle: between us, who want moments of the real Mario, the cheerful and optimistic one despite the objective difficulties of his existence, and him, who proposes a tragic but partial Mario, convinced that by loading his testimony with suffering and melodrama, the story of his life will have more appeal...

Wer immer hofft stirbt singend is a bagatelle bordering on the burlesque, in which Kluge combines (historical) visual material and nostalgic images of various disasters with very graphically elaborated title card texts. The somewhat awkward Mexican Banda music underlines the bittersweet character of the work.
