Thunderdome XIX: Cursed By Evil Sickness

Journey of discovery with Bugs Bunny into the realm of the bears.

A film by Guadalupe Olvera San Miguel. Combines documentary and narrative forms to present a history of the lesbian movement in Mexico from its origins to the present. Interviews with Mexican lesbians and movement leaders present impressions of daily life in their country.

The country side inspiration and the resulting contemporary sound track, written by Tom Zé and José Miguel Wisnik, for 1997’s Parabelo, prompted the choreographer from Grupo Corpo to bring into life that, which he himself refers to, as his “most Brazilian and regional” creation. From working and devotion chants, from the memory of the rhythmic baião and from the exuberant and an ever present, entangled, rhythmic points and counterpoints, emerges choreography full of hip swaying and feet stamping. It’s a ravishing statement of maturity and of the expressive teachings, developed throughout many years, by the maker of Missa do Orfanato and Sete ou Oito Peças para um Ballet. The aesthetic of the votive offerings, from country side churches, inspire Fernando Velloso and Paulo Pederneiras in the creation of the 15 meter X 8 meter panels, which provide support for the ballet’s stage setting.

Charlie, a repressed gay man, has anal sex for the first time in his life. As a result, he falls victim to a new and rare disease called Sexually Repressed Shedding Disorder, which leads to the strange duplication of his body. Charlie discovers that he only has twenty-four hours to “re-integrate” his new body back into his old in order to continue his safe closeted existence.

Amar Kanwar’s A Season Outside is a thought provoking quest to investigate the futility or validity of violence. The film employs several codes of conflict and discord—from the territorial border of India and Pakistan to visuals of Tibetan refugee settlement— to satiate the curiosity to posit violence as a credible response to hurt and harm. It questions its worthiness as device to exact revenge on the transgressor.

The police drama La Escolta Muerte En Primavera follows detectives as they attempt to solve the murder of a prostitute. Although there appears to be a rock-solid prime suspect, they soon learn that the case is far more complicated than they first thought.

The grand themes of Albert Camus' work and life are documented in three chapters: the Absurd, Revolt, and Happiness. His novels The Stranger, The Plague, The Rebel, The Fall and The First Man are all discussed, as well as his childhood in French Algeria, sometimes difficult friendships, role in The Resistance during WWII, 1957 Nobel Prize, his issues with Communism, living in exile in the '50s, and his accidental death at 47. His life is spoken about by the narrator, his sister-in-law, his son, his daughter, friends, critics, scholars and mistresses. The impression is of Camus as a charismatic, flawed, and yet principled man when it came to the task of confronting human existence without conforming.

This video comprises three fictional tales of women's lives. In the first, Yasmine, a chambermaid, depicts her own imaginary world, drawing inspiration from a book of poems by Ahmed Bouanani, the director’s father. The second features a fortune teller who narrates her story using the ronda, a Moroccan-Spanish card game. The third is inspired by the travel chronicles of Isabelle Eberhardt and by Taos Amrouche’s rendition of The Song of Exile.

A vast landscape of riverways supporting an endless bounty of wildlife and flora created the backdrop for the people we know very little about today. Directed by noted National Park Service film producer John Grabowska, Gente de Razón delicately examines current interpretations of who these people were, the intricacies of their daily lives, and where they went, as it chronicles the ever-changing face of San Antonio and its people.

He tells eight experiments done in different places or occasions (in a car, at the opera, at a rock gig, listening a walkman,..). He expresses how the way you are listening can affect your feelings and reflection. His voice and his written words appearing on screen are the mental counterpoint of silent images.

Brice Dellsperger's reprise of Brian de Palma's Blow Out
