Connie Gomper and the Pack is a 1996 sports comedy short film that serves as an affectionate, over-the-top lampoon of the famously dedicated fans of the Green Bay Packers. Originally produced as a 20-minute segment for the nationally syndicated television program NFL Films Presents, the feature became so highly requested by viewers that it was later released as a standalone home video.

On March 15, 1996, Pope.L strolled along 125th Street in Harlem—the bustling mecca of black America—wearing business attire, a backpack containing a stuffed white bunny, and, most conspicuously, an adjustable cardboard tube protruding from his crotch. Propped up by the base of a rolling office chair, the tube allowed Pope.L’s “member” to extend up to fourteen feet. Occasionally, the artist would pause to drop a raw egg down the tube, causing it to splatter on the sidewalk. Adding to the spectacle, Pope.L intermittently covered his head with a latex glove that expanded and contracted as he breathed. Intended as “commentary on the supremacy of the white phallus,” and playing with stereotypes of black masculinity, the performance stirred up controversy before it could even be carried out: when news reached Capitol Hill that Pope.L might use National Endowment for the Arts funds toward the performance, the acting chairman of the NEA deemed the work “indecent” and rescinded his grant.

Its residents were barred from citizenship. Even so, over 150 years, Chinatown’s residents have managed to create a thriving community.

As each new generation makes its mark on the fabric of Australian society, inevitably changes in lifestyles and attitudes will occur. Throughout the 20th century, the motion picture camera has recorded these changes, creating a permanent, living record of our past. This program has been compiled from Cinesound and Movietone Newsreel items, as well as advertising films from the 1930s to the 1960s. As you watch this video, some of the stories will make you laugh, others you may find distasteful, a few will seem absurd, but most of them are certain to make you cringe.

13,000 km from mainland France, Crozet, Kerguelen, and Amsterdam are so isolated that even today they can only be reached by boat. No one has ever lived there permanently, except for shipwreck survivors or the unfortunate executors of unfeasible projects. But around these jagged coasts, a history of adventure has been built: that of the Chevalier de Kerguelen, who believed he had discovered a new Eldorado; that of seal and whale hunters, explorers, and industrialists who dreamed of “colonizing” these barren islands... Ruins, shipwrecks, and tiny remains tell the story, and logbooks are opened. All reflect a fascination with these islands, which seem to hide themselves away as if to protect a mystery.

Commissioned for Hans-Ulrich Obrist's "Museum-in-Progress" series Do It, Smith's "How to Curate Your Own Group Exhibition" is a deadpan infomercial explaining exactly what the beginning curator needs to know. Television professionals shot and edited the piece, yielding a flashy "spot" in which Smith plays a corporate talking head, concerned with a 21st-century "transferral of curatorial responsibilities into the hands of the artists, as well as an artist who simply wants to get into more group shows. When I was told of the imminent demolition of a house in Bogotá’s Chapinero neighborhood –a house inhabited by one family’s several generations– I made it my business to learn about what had transpired there. During a whole year, I frequented and talked with the mother, Helena Uribe; her three daughters, Erna, Erika, and Giselle Von der Walde; and with friends as well as tenants that had been there at one time or another. I made interviews and recorded everyday scenes, among them the moving and the demolition. Later on, I turned all of that material into a piece consisting of four simultaneous video projections. With this work, I expected that the spectators –as they stood in the middle of the exhibit hall– would experience a state of loss and of familiar as well as urban violence.

In his first film, A Prayer for Nettie, Donigan Cumming had placed Albert at the heart of the posthumous tribute to Nettie, his former model. One year later, he composed Cut the Parrot, a new requiem intended for Albert, who also died amid total indifference. As in his previous film, the film-maker gathered a series of eulogies in honour of the deceased from the people, some close and others not so close, who were emotionally affected by his death. But this film differs from the previous one in that it seems to be based not only on respect but also on an intense anger. Several times Donigan films his own face and angrily tells about how he was informed of Albert's death or about his visit to the morgue to identify the body. From then on the principle behind his cinematographic quest seems clearly exposed: no life, however marginal it may seem, should end in such a way, without any consideration.

An artfully erotic tale of imagination and desire. The story of a naval officer who, arriving to port with just her duffel bag and leather chaps, goes looking for adventure — and finds it. Has the sailor returned home for good, or is she on weekend leave? Is the woman she meets on the docks a working girl, or a kindred soul looking for more than fun? Do they fall in love, or do they just…? In this slightly mysterious tale of fast pick-ups and safe sex, questions like these serve to heighten the erotic charge of the encounter these two women share.

The life of Ruby Langford Ginibi is a story of triumph against the odds. She was born on a mission station, and her mother left the family when Langford was six years old. At the age of 16 she embarked on the first of four tumultuous relationships and went on to raise nine children, working as a fencer, cleaner and machinist. Three of her children died, and one son has spent almost half his life in correctional institutions. In 1984, after shaking off an alcohol addiction, Langford wrote her autobiography Don't Take Your Love to Town, which won the 1988 Human Rights Literary Award.
