The film tells the stories of Crimean Tatars who returned to their homeland half a century after their forced deportation by Stalin’s regime on 18 May 1944. At the heart of the film is an interview with Besibe Aksakova, an activist in the Crimean Tatar movement. She shares her own experience of exile and reflects on how, in her life story, the statuses of “war heroine” and “enemy of the people” were paradoxically combined.

The film is dedicated to the centennial of cinema and, through a pastiche of excerpts from Balkan silent films, pays tribute to a cinema that has been almost completely forgotten. Old photographs and a modern- day train trip through the Balkans highlight the coincidences, the similarities, and the affinities that link Balkan filmmakers. A film about all the things that unite the neighbouring countries of the peninsula, which, perhaps, are many more than the things that divide them.

"Mike MacDonald's video installation Touched By The Tears of a Butterfly is the fourth in a series of installations this artist has produced over the past ten years. As with the other three, this work is a simple and direct presentation in the passive defense of ecologies. Unlike the other three, this installation utilizes a single video image thus transforming the grid which marked the earlier work as well as employing external elements in its realization. Touched By The Tears of a Butterfly consists of seven rocking chairs each a different colour and placed before a silk scrim that flutters in the breeze of an air ionizer. The viewer is invited to sit in one of the chairs to watch the fourteen minute video of a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis and preparing to fly. Following are images of different butterflies feeding. ... " Excerpt from QUIET WARNINGS OF OUR PERIL - MIKE MACDONALD by Glenn Alteen, March 1996

Dust, heat, noise and coal - how do they feel? How do the workers in the opencast coal mines imagine their own body. In all professions, a fragment of health is exchanged for wages. Coal mining is risky because of the miner's exposure to dust, coal dust, explosives and heat. This exposure hinders the possibilities to create in a region that has become the cradle of great accordion music composers.

Through the eyes of children and women of different generations, this film reveals the soul of a small village on the Upper North Shore. Mrs. Kennedy has a vital link with the forest: Diane, faced with the difficult path of her life, raises her head; Cathy, at 18, has the biting lucidity of those who have had to fight. The strength and willpower of each of them is echoed by Guylaine, the young soprano who, throughout the film, plays, sings and exudes joie de vivre.

The subway, which spreads like a spider web under the heart of a huge city, is a blue mirror that projects our appearance. The concrete of the city, which grows bigger day by day, is today's baobab tree and the mannequin flowing underneath it. There are no people under the modern appearance of the city that is more splendid today due to the absence of tomorrow. The end of the city, where only symbols remain, is therefore empty.
