To describe the events spreading out in Aurore, in Royaume and in Bleu, suitable tools still have to be found ; up until now, nothing much has been said or done about a cinema that quite specifically deals with picture as a sensation. Then one can always attempt, as plainly as possible, to draw a few lines, trying to single out a few dimensions, a few questions, a few perspectives that run through these films and relate them to the history of pictures and cinema.

There’s just not enough room in Pittsburgh to keep everything, and we’ve gotten rid of some things that people miss a lot. But it’s definitely fun to be reminded about stuff that’s gone. Remember Winky’s hamburger joints? All the drive-in theaters that used to be around here? The Gazebo restaurant in Shadyside? Did you ever sit up late listening to Party Line on KDKA radio? Or stop to gawk at the KQV window? Remember when you could wave goodbye at the old Greater Pittsburgh Airport? Or cheer for the Pittsburgh Maulers? Did you know there once were some 17 or 18 inclines in this area? And two great old amusement parks near McKeesport? We celebrate all that and more in this program called STUFF THAT'S GONE. It's a follow-up to WQED's phenomenally successful THINGS THAT AREN'T THERE ANYMORE. It's a blast! (Or was that the Coraopolis Bridge?)

The castle is preparing for the arrival of the princess who inherited the estate, the miller is in love with Hanička, as is the water sprite from the millrace, the teacher wants to complain to the authorities about his poverty, and the musician Klásek is running away from his wife. Seemingly everything is like something out of Jirásek. But that would be impossible if Josef Dvořák were playing the steward, the bailiff, the water sprite Michal, and Klásek. Hanička couldn't be missing parts of her underwear, the butler Franz couldn't have a suspicious fondness for his baroque outfit, and the princess (who got the estate back through restitution) shouldn't fall into unintentional (and unacted) fits of laughter.

Raphael strives to capture the open and sympathetic face of his friend and deliberately simplifies his composition. Yet the image is filled with clues and can be interpreted today using both traditional laboratory analysis and historical archives. The technical details of the pictorial surface, the choice of colors, and the hidden symmetries of the image already reveal how the painting was created. But the clothing, the hairstyle, the materials used, and even the model’s gaze—or the way the reflections are placed in his eyes—each carry a precise meaning within this composition.

The highly structured yet simple overall design of the film is the landscape from which these characters evolve and express their human complexities. These pedestrians express the light and the dark, the contradictory emotions and responses to both the world they have created and the to each other.
