Cinematic Era: 1994 Vintage

Filmed in Russia. The artistic itinerary and life of Giacomo Quarenghi, born in 1744 in Capiatone of Rota Imagna (Bergamo), a fistful of houses linked to the outside world by a narrow mule track. He was summoned to Russia, to the court of the Tsars, by Catherine II, a great admirer of Quarenghi. In St. Petersburg between the end of the 1700s and the start of the 1800s, a great number of palaces designed by him are built. He is a lonely man, despite the fevour of one of the most scintillating courts in Europe which surrounds him.

A young woman has lost access to her memory. Modern laboratory technology makes it possible to send her on a dream journey of remembrance. Her brain is connected to a computer that confronts her with video recordings from her past, with vacation and family photos that everyone is familiar with and that nevertheless become an unforgettable part of one's own memory because they can be accessed at any time. Using silent film and techniques from the video age, the film tells a story about the intrusion of media into individual memory.

The style is experimental though it is primarily a fiction - a journey within an interior space - a view of America by a travelling femme and her obsession with a genderbending butch. Is it only one woman's journey? The multiple voice over implies that it is a symbol for all strange journeys through place and time - across the border of desire and beyond.

Using his interviews the film takes us on a journey through his life, starting from his love for music as a child to his greatest achievements. Exploring Indian classical music the film also enters the realm of the poetic meaning of the lyrics and Mansur interpretations of those. Filled with personal anecdotes it talks about his personal life and how his music never got affected by it. The film is a tribute to the music and to the man.

Catherine Lord, a breeder of 25 years, covers prenatal care, whelping, and the care of young puppies. She discusses preparation before birth, features an actual whelping, an interview with a veterinarian, and an insightfully informative discussion with a panel of experienced breeders.

Part 2. The period between the two world wars can hardly be called favorable for the development of Ukrainian science and culture, the only center of which remained the Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society. However, with the arrival of Soviet power in Lviv, it was banned. Part 3. Fifty years after the ban, the Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society resumed its activities in Ukraine. The indestructible brotherhood of intellect and conscience returned to its homeland.

Each year, on the third Thrusday in Lent, there is a traditional procession in Pont-sur-Sambre, a small town in the north of France, some 200 kilometers away from Paris. The 104th such procession, in 1993, was a special occasion because it was also the christening of Jean-Jean the giant, who is the symbolic figure of the local peasantry. But a giant often conceals another one. As the film ends, the village mayor turns out ot be even more interesting than Jean-Jean.

In this incisive documentary, the history of rap and hip-hop is explored as well as the larger social context of American race and class relations. Interviews with Ice-T, Queen latifah, KRS-One, Chuck D and Rakim explore the context of rap’s evolution and offer necessary defences of the music’s relevance and importance to African-American youth; especially in the context of a popular media that has often dismissed rap as misogynist or “inauthentic”. Made by two Australian brothers who fell in love with the music, this documentary gives a voice to the power, impact, originality and importance of rap and hip-hop.
