Cinematic Era: 1992 Vintage

Yigal Borstein's experimental short film is based on Baruch Spinoza's book of the same name ("Ethics", in Latin). Spinoza called his philosophical theory "geometric"; Accordingly, the prominent visual element in this film is also the geometry. Burstein shows what is happening simultaneously on four balconies of one building. The camera films the events statically and without movement, and as time passes, the events alternate using jump-cuts. The building is a microcosm of Israeli society, whose representatives inhabit each of the balconies: the lonely writer, the young woman and her partner, the family with children who live with the grandmother, the older couple - and later also the Arabs, followed by the IDF soldiers who drive them away.

"Need to think" is the sequel to the 1983 film documentary "Mama funny ...?". The protagonist is once again Christian, a young man with Down's Syndrome who is by now twenty-four years old.

This film consists of several portraits of boys, sometimes alone - in an interior, in front of a window, other times in a group, three dancers on a roof - or even as a couple, kissing, hugging. These scenes are intertwined with each other, supporting a waking dream whose desire is the driving force.

Many have been converted to Christianity. They perform their tribal dances for money, and use calculators to determine the charges. Susan shows them the old film and they respond with excitement to images of their former selves. The skillful intercutting of old and new footage dramatizes the effects of westernization on an indigenous people.

The story is filmed in the style of a 'fake documentary' and it is about a missing woman named Suzana Arsova. We get to know more about Suzana through the interviews with her acquaintances, relatives and friends…

Eventually, however, they find out about each others' backgrounds. Ramona backs off, while Ramadhan continues to pursue her.
