Wolfgang Mattheuer, together with Bernhard Heisig and Werner Tübke, is one of the main protagonists of the Leipzig School. With works such as Behind the Seven Mountains (1973) the graphic artist, painter and sculptor is one of the most controversial and yet most celebrated artists of the former GDR. With the use of mythology, literary references, and ambiguous details, he subverted the ideological edicts of the system. This film presents the great works of this reserved, yet perceptive ‘picture maker’. An insightful interview with Mattheuer introduces us to his eclectic visual world and his metaphorical response to contemporary events and the GDR regime.

Tecnomaya in Infotown (New Dangers replace Fear) merges four years of research, which began in 1987 with techno videos for the Tenax discotheque in Florence, continued with the 1988 installation Run Go at the Murnik Gallery in Milan, and culminated with the 1989 Electronic Mandalas. The stratification of messages gives rise to Tecnomaya: the illusion multiplied by technology; hallucinatory emission and irradiation materialize into layered, infinite, indecipherable information, where false and real blend in epidemic immaterial irradiation.

Jiang Yue and cinematographer Bi Jianfeng set out to capture a Lama Tibetan Opera group. They did not have much knowledge about filming documentaries at the time. Jiang Yue wanted to artificially construct the scene, but this idea was quickly dispelled by the director of the Tibetan Opera group, Yixi Jiacuo, who insisted that there must be audiences in order for the players to perform on camera. By the end of the show, the audience was touched, as was Jiang, who said that he realized that there was a different energy to his film because of the audience's presence.

Articles of former East Germany from household items to flags are thrown away at a garbage dump outside of East Berlin, serving as a reminder of a state that no longer exists. In this gesture of breaking ties with the past, the film captures the dumping ground as the last burial site of a society and the absurdity of time and existence.

The invisible becomes visible. Every room has a spirit which sleeps beneath the layers of peeling paint and wallpaper. Spirit of Place observes the awakening of such a spirit, coerced into life by moonlight to reveal sumptuous velvets, decaying gilt, and an assemblage of neo-Gothic objects d‘art – a ghostly reflection of its past. In one long, carefully choreographed sequence, pictures animate and a message is disclosed as the motion control camera passes on its programmed course.

Using hand-manipulated images, ECHO ANTHEM attempts to uncover the underbelly of jingoism in 1991 America, and show its destructive conclusion. In a perverse twist, the film invites the viewer to be at once soothed and repulsed by the seething display of the flag and what it leads to. The film establishes a tension between visual beauty and narrative and thematic concerns. ECHO ANTHEM is made up of three sections, each suggesting the same sequence of events. The viewer is challenged to fluctuate between states - from being engulfed by the visuals to being concerned about the narrative particulars and thematic possibilities.

Józef Gębski's film is a documentary reconstruction of the crime committed by NKVD officers against Polish officers imprisoned in Starobielsk and Kharkov in 1940. Accounts of historians and prosecutors are juxtaposed with the testimony of the then heads of the central and regional NKVD board.

It started off as personal letter I imagined a woman like me would write to, say, a lover back home. I initially had an image in mind to talk to but gradually that image fell apart, became obscure, diverse and unrecognisable. Amidst the minute, unconnected pieces I had to ‘make up’ that image myself. Making this film forced me to rethink my relationship with that image and if possible, exorcise it. – Y.C.

For many ages the Armenian nation, having no statehood, has concentrated all its values in the family and made it the center of the national spirit. The main characters of the film arrived in northern Armenia and not from paradise. They are refugees who escaped from violence. Both of them are young. The woman is pregnant. They create a world around themselves, and thus create themselves.

Anyone who becomes old and therefore unprofitable apparently belongs in the bin. This ideology is taken at its word. An old man actually ends up on the garbage tip.

“On Tour” is performed before a live audience. The Donut Man, Duncan and the Donut Repair Club present the basic “Good News” that Jesus loves us and takes care of us; with songs and lots of jumping, clapping and playing pretend. Lots of action-songs!

The Mississippi Mass Choir's second album, God Gets The Glory, was recorded live at the Mississippi Coliseum on December 8, 1990. The album debuted on the Billboard chart in the Number 16 position, reaching Number 1 position two weeks later. Awards followed with the release of the album.
