Originally an eight-monitor installation, Rite and Expression is an impressionistic evocation of the cultural history of Our Lady of the Rosario Church, a Baroque edifice in the central Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Built during the seventeenth century in the historic gold-mining town of Ouro Preto (Black Gold), the Rosario Church was intended as a cultural and social locus for African slaves. Santos draws on the natural (earth, wood, stone, gold, inks and paints), the human, the social and cultural (the Rosario Feast, African garments and ritual objects) in his electronic reconstruction of the sole Minas Gerais church imprinted with Italian influence. The church's round shapes and forms evoke both Baroque motifs and African cultural rituals.

Based loosely on the short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, ‘Faded Wallpaper’ is concerned with visual perception, madness and the search for identity. A woman, isolated within a room, becomes obsessed with the wallpaper surrounding her, seeing within its faded patterns strange images – at times pleasurable and seductive, at times threatening and dangerous. As these images become more insistent she begins to strip the wallpaper away in an attempt either to banish the images or get to their source. Words and sounds run through her head as she peels away the layers, questioning her own self-image, her imagination and her sanity. No solutions are given, only more questions… T.K.

The tape is a video collage of models and lighting effects. The models are based on Ancient Egyptian culture and its mythological figures, staged as tableaux: «Anubis-Charon-Tableau», «Isis and Osiris-Tableau» and «Horus-Tableau». The single scenes are acted out using paper models of the figures and mythological objects. Different scales of light and shade form the background and help to evoke thematic atmospheres such as «The Air under the Wings», «Circling Night» or «The Black Shadow».

This film places side by side the mirrored image of an installation/performance, by the artist Miles McKane. Rather than documenting the piece, the film tries to restitute the spatial dimensions which occurred in the original piece. The participants movements and the panoramic metaphorically reproduce the base element of the installation, namely the white cone.

Passage du désir, a prelude by Jakobois uses the pornographic video-image to which a rhythmical treatment has been given. The sexual activity is explicit. We can clearly understand what is going on. Ultimately there Is the Impression of a stained glass window fixed over the screen. It seems that the desire of the film-maker is to create a new sensual vision out of the perception of the video Image.
