Cinematic Era: 1988 Vintage

The 1988 Australian bicentenary prompted many artistic events and contemporary expressions of Australia's living cultures. One of the most remarkable of these was the first memorial ever created by Aborigines for Aborigines - two hundred bone burial poles were carved and painted by Arnhem land artists to honour the deceased of the past - lost people, lost tribes, lost languages. This unique Aboriginal Memorial captures this spiritual event. This collection seeks to reassure surviving Aboriginal Australians that there is a living continuity of traditions. -Ronin Films

“A friend had given me some old footage shot in Germany pre-WWII...during the ‘30s. Among all the images of sport, and people dancing, were images of Hitler making his early speeches. So this film is about the terrible tension of that period...jitterbugging on top of the volcano, the frentic activity to have a good life in the face of the brewing horror of Nazism. I used all kinds of techniques...travelling mattes, optical printer, rotoscoping and hand colouring, and scratching the film. The physical mutilation of the film frame, of Hitler's image...scratching out his eyes, brought fantastic relief. But I'm still not finished with Hitler, because no-one is. The sleuth interviews the man's cohorts who willingly provide unusable information to his whereabouts. Da Costa's biggest clue is a videotape of a young man who appears to be the man in question.

“The Last Days of Contrition (35 minutes black and white 1988) is an exploration of the Canadian and American landscapes, and the relationship between the two. The narrative deals with a journey through timeless, vacant American landscapes (baseball stadiums, Venice Beach, Mojave Desert, and a US Missile Base). The photographic strategy is influenced by a consciousness of light, a quintessential characteristic of American photography. I documented the American landscape in the tradition of the early formalist photographers (Walker Evans, Paul Strand, etc.) allowing there to be content in form. The Last Days of Contrition straddles two cultural forces while developing an understanding about our Canadian origins and muses. (RK)

A young Palestinian in exile explores his connection to a land he wasn’t born in, influenced by his father’s language and his grandmother’s stories from Gaza. He meets Nu’ma, who introduces him to Om-Mazen, another exile in Egypt. Om-Mazen, filled with questions and roots, shares stories and melodies with the young man, who listens as she reminisces about her childhood. The girls around them describe the bond between Om-Mazen and the young man, each with their own stories and connections to places like Nablus and Beirut. Their characters, along with Om-Mazen, the young man, and the melody, become intertwined, with the wind always present, causing the branch to quiver.

The film depicts the years before the collapse of the Soviet system and the rebellion against it. Its protagonist is a young man who cannot get along in Soviet society, which is why many people consider him crazy. As a result, he decides to illegally cross the border and finally escape the confines of everyday life, challenging the tired system one last time.

The machine is introduced into the thousand-year-old garden, as a feudal Japan is modernized. American-Japanese relations are traced in 19th-century prints and 20th-century newsreels, which are scrolled, magnified, and submitted to electronic effects. The emperor is shown visiting an iron foundry in much the same way that he visits a grove in cherry blossom time. Lighting technology changes from candles to gas to electronics — now the empress can visit the rice fields under waves of computer graphics. Newsreels make much of the emperor's signature on articles of surrender at the end of World War II and of MacArthur's triumphant return to the United States. It is with utmost irony that we hear the emperor's admonishment to the coal industry (via an American newsreel voice collaged into this program for West German television): "So it is my hope, you will make your very best efforts..." The screen abruptly cuts to black. The series ends.

Erua tells the story of an intriguing friendship between artist Toss Woollaston and a young Māori boy Erua who modelled for him each Wednesday evening in Greymouth, in the early 60s. Woollaston had seen the boy playing "like one dark bead shaken in a tray of pale ones". The image made him curious to find what Erua was like, and to try to draw "that".

Blanka is an experienced and respected editor of a book publishing house, and she is currently working on a book by the young mountaineer Frantisek Andrlík. She takes care of her grown-up children Sárka and Vojta and spends time with her boyfriend — lawyer Otakar. Her life is marked by two major events, first when she accidentally scalded Sárka as a child, causing her significant burns. And secondly, when her husband died. The first accident in particular noticeably changed Blanka’s attitude towards her daughter. She continually blames herself for the visible scars on Sárka's body and attends to her with excessive care and concern. At home, however, this results only in conflicts and mutual misunderstanding. Sárka is only irritated with her mother and increasingly resents her mother for unknowingly taking away her own living space. For this reason, she keeps many things from her mother so that she can at least sometimes breathe freely.

In 1988, the RAC Rally produced one of the most exciting and unpredictable events in its illustrious history. An impressively strong line-up of top drivers and leading manufacturers gathered in Harrogate for five days of the toughest rally competition over 52 snow and ice-covered stages. Fewer than half the crews would make the finish.

The film is a microcosm of "life" in which four strangers, who have nothing to do with each other in the first place, end up in one house, struggling with instinct, greed, madness and sheer luck. Like his grandfather and his father before him, François Pernet is a mountain peasant and works with wood. He trained as a carpenter and cabinet maker and owns the last water-powered sawmill still operating in French-speaking Switzerland. He and his wife have five children, two of their own, and three nephews adopted after the death of their parents in a car accident. So, to earn a living, he makes and carves cupboards and turns bannisters. In addition to his work, Pernet has become a sculptor as well. His bas-relief carvings, which have decorated local cafés, show various aspects of mountain life, including hunters, poachers, chamois and other animals.

In the Soviet era, everyone wanted to go to Moscow because people in Moscow "had everything"! Meanwhile, limits were imposed on out-of-towners arriving in Moscow. They were hired for jobs that Muscovites considered unworthy; they spent years in dilapidated dormitories waiting for a residence permit. While the dream of enjoying equal opportunities with Muscovites wasn't out of reach, it was a lengthy and exhausting process to get there, especially in the face of growing resentment from the locals.
