Cinematic Era: 1986 Vintage

A poetic meditation on music and meaning in cinema. Aurally iconographic music fragments have been decomposed, then re-composed into loops and patterns, and combined with eclectically chosen imagery shot mostly in the western United States. The result is both a reflection of the artistÕs sensibilities and a commentary on commercial media values. At once a celebration of visual beauty and a semiological investigation into how musical codes and imagery combine to create meaning, Shades Of Meaning has been called paradoxical, mystical and elegant, pregnant with multiple meanings and a powerful tool for reflection.

The Italian Lancia and the French Peugeot teams came to the renowned 1000 Lakes Rally hotly disputing the manufacturers' title, with Markku Alen matched against Timo Salonen. Peugeot, however, had another ace in the pack in the shape of 27 year-old rising local star Juha Kankkunen, who was looking extremely good for the drivers' championship. This video captures in enthralling fashion the red-hot battle through the Finnish forests, with their huge ‘yumps’ and flat-out straights. Always a rally to set the pulses racing, Alen had the Lancia Delta running at its best and his ability to control the S4 at seemingly impossible speeds and angles will amaze the viewer. Supporting him would be Kalle Grundel, specially released from his Ford RS200 commitments and pushing hard on his home territory. Again though, Peugeot were taking no chances by fielding the experienced Stig Blomqvist, also no stranger to the 1000 Lakes.

“When you walk through the Bush, you hardly ever see any animals—they tend to take cover long before you actually come anywhere near them. Like a lizard, or a wallaby, which sees you and disappears. So I decided to make a film where I’d insert them… from photographs…into footage of the Bush. To make this work physically and filmically I had to invent and construct my matte-box image shifter. I wanted the animals, the sentinels of the Bush, to appear and disappear…the Bush to be living and moving. With the image shifter I matted them in and matted them out…what they now call ‘morphing’. This film was very popular with people who didn’t know much about avant-garde film—it was easy to watch, and they could get a lot of information about the type of flora and fauna in this country.” (Paul Winkler)

He continued his ministry in his books, never losing sight of the Christian ethic he wanted to impart to his readers. They responded by making him the most popular author of his time.

Mexican feature film

Describes the confrontation between Philadelphia Police and members of the MOVE organization on Mother's Day, 1985, which left 11 men, women and children members of MOVE dead and 61 homes destroyed by fire. The events are situated in the history of Blacks in Philadelphia, the MOVE organization, and the Cobbs Creek neighborhood. All this is explored through historical photographs, interviews and footage of the confrontation and its resulting hearings.

Every year since 1980, I have filmed the Good Friday ceremony reconstructing the Passion of Christ in Burzet, a remote village in the Ardèche area, where for seven hundred years, the local people have dressed up to celebrate and perpetuate this religious rite. (Gérard Courant)

Despite of his father Tae-Min the ex-boxer's recommendation, Se-Il declares not to be a boxer and keeps away from boxing when he meet Young-Ah who likes boxing. Meanwhile, Tae-Min falls to sickbed because of heavy drinking in sadness when his son does not understand him and Young-Ah too leaves Se-Il. Enraged at it, Se-Il challenges to the four-cornered ring. On the day when he is about to fight on the ring, his mother who's been thought as dead comes and asks him to complete his father's dream. The way to the champion is long and difficult journey.

Shot in a retirement home over a period of two years, this film raises the question of "how to take care". The director films with great tenderness, not only the daily life of patients with senile dementia, but also the work of caregivers. Widely broadcast, the film sparked lively debate on the care and support society in Japan.

The story takes place in a village at a time that is deliberately undetermined, but could be current. Two girls is told to a guest passing through their mother withdrawn from the world: Saadia was raped after a fierce resistance. Despite killing her assailant, the village men's council felt provocative and sentenced her to death. The second is forced to marry a husband chosen by his father.

Inspired by their teacher during their first history lesson, a group of eight- and nine-year-old children decides to create an animated film about prehistory. Through four colorful scenes depicting the life of prehistoric humans, they creatively incorporate their own ideas and experiences. This project, born from a workshop at Atelier Graphoui, shows how history comes to life through the eyes of children.

A young lad is wracked with guilt after believing that he has killed his friend.

A penetrating look at how difficult it is for the northern countries--Canada, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark--to remain neutral, caught as they are between the two superpowers. All but Canada were neutral before World War II. Today, only Sweden has not joined a military alliance, but with American and Soviet military forces in the northern seas, even its lone neutrality is at risk. Archival footage from the two world wars, animated maps, and interviews illuminate the historical shaping of each country's stance on neutrality and approach to its own defense, and how these positions work for and against the countries. The film's thesis is that a non-aligned north is the key to separating the superpowers and attaining world peace.

Action from the 2nd round of the 1986 World Rally Championship took place in the snow covered forests of Sweden. Henri Toivonen, still fired up from his win in the opening round at Monte Carlo was confident he could maintain his early lead in the very fast Lancia Martini. Stiff competition was expected from Ford who used this Swedish round to debut the new RS200 and with Juha Kankkunen in his Peugeot ready to show a clean pair of heels - this is rallying at its slipping, sliding best. Strong challenges from Eriksson’s Golf GTi Audi, Mazda, Rover and Citroen were expected. Would Toivonen triumph, or was there a surprise in store?

The 1986 Lombard RAC Rally marked a milestone. This was the last time the awesome Group B machines would see World Rally Championship action in Europe before being banned after a season of tragedy and controversy. The British round would ensure these 'supercars' would go out with a dramatic bang! The four-day event was shrouded in controversy following Peugeot's disqualification from the previous round, but the politics was put aside as the drivers battled for victory.
