A young Mother dying of cancer, her children, husband and close friends talk about it with filmmakers Bronwen Wallace and Chris Wynott on a beautiful autumn day in Eastern Ontario countryside. Sometimes uncomfortably honest and forthright with comic moments.

A Complaint of Rape made news around the world and inspired then British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, to question the procedure as well as the attitude of those involved. The woman was asked deeply inappropriate personal questions about her sex life, menstruation and her mental health. The officers dismissed her claims and told her directly that they didn’t believe her. The film instigated a public outcry and as Graef noted on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row in 2014, the ‘film came after three very controversial rape cases the week before and the police quietly changed the way they handled rape.’

A playful portrait of designer Ryoichi Enomato, a former collaborator of the Shuji Terayama and the Tenjō Sajiki theater troupe. Kyoko Michishita: “…when I asked Enomoto, the king of parody, to let me film him at the Japan Graphic Exhibition, an event that has become the gateway to success for commercial artists, he gracefully took his clothes off for me. But he asked to wear sunglasses to hide his embarrassment.”

The daily lives of a group of mentally disabled adults in Chita, Aichi Prefecture. 45 year old Toki strictly observes a daily working routine of simple tasks, straightening books on shelves in a book store, and visiting a regular circuit of pachinko parlors in order to empty their ashtrays. Yanagisawa introduces us to each of the film's subjects in a similar manner: 51 year old Kayo for instance, who fends off everyone with a bamboo stick. The community came into existence quite gradually, inspired by an exchange set up by some of the parents. Overcoming the objections of the local government association, the residents move into a rented building and, working with their guidance staff, they decide to create a facility based on plans they themselves have drawn up. The group then figures out who should be assigned what task as they remodel and finally complete work on the building turning it into a communal work place they dub "Popeye House."

This beautifully photographed, revealing film about Egypt's women captures their separate and subordinate life under the Islamic code. Men and women speak about their traditions, expectations, and patterns of life. We meet articulate women who have had little schooling and whose lives are centered on childbearing and hard physical work. They acknowledge that their choices in life are limited. The Koran dictates behavior at every stage of life. Their husbands are selected by their fathers. Often, at puberty they are taken out of school. They unquestioningly accept circumcision, arranged marriages, huge families and polygamous husbands. Women after marriage are secluded and some may never set eyes on another man. By participating in this film, the women question for the first time some of the assumptions of their lives.

In the 1970s, Val del Omar started to film frequently in Super 8. These reels, in the form of essays and notebooks, include the fabulous experiences with image and light that he investigated in his PLAT laboratory, and a series of private recordings (trips, holidays, portraits), that also include variations and experiments on his main themes (water, flowers, the Alhambra…). Transfiguring his most everyday reality, Val del Omar continued the revelations of its mecamystics: “The extraordinary is in the bowels of the everyday […] I feel as though I am submerged in a palpitating being. Logical chains enchain and imprison us.”

"Nani-na, sleep tight" is the song Bulgarian mothers sing to their little babies. It is obvious that the same song is sung to the little babies in the women's prison in Sliven where the great Bulgarian director Binka Zhelyazkova made two documentaries, the first one named "Nani-Na" /"Lullaby"/ with the incredible true stories of the prisoners in that facility. Immediately forbidden, this movie plus the other one - "Lice i opako" or "The Bright and Dark Side of Things" also made the same year were shown 8 years later when the socialist regime wrongly named as communist one fell apart in 1989. Sadly, Binka Zhelyazkova made no other movie after 1990 until her death in 2011. Deeply insulted by the Bulgarian authorities she decided to decline from cinematographic work, which is something very frustrating indeed, given that all her movies are now evergreen classics.

A short Super 8 film by → ↑ → which is exactly what the title says. The focus of the film, though, is the audiovisual effects generated by placing an alternative soundtrack to the original images. The spoken fragments are snippets of commentary remembered from watching the broadcast, making the film a deconstruction not only of the original broadcast, but also of the experience of watching the broadcast. The droning layers of built-up synthesizer noise obliterate the expected musical spectacle. This film set the agenda for Philip Brophy's altered/reworked soundtracks in numerous films and videos since: from 1982's Ads through to the 2000-2015 cycle Evaporated Music.

Mail Art Romance is a documentary about the avant garde poets and artists John M. Bennett and C. Mehrl ("Lady C") Bennett's courtship through mail-art in the late 1970's and early 1980s. Shot on 16mm film by John McClintock, the film is both a document of the DADA / Fluxus related underground mail-art movement of the period and a unique testament to the power of "true love". The film features interviews with both artists as well as their Columbus, OH post-man, reenactments of collaborative poems by the couple, examples of their mail-art and footage from their July 4th, 1980 wedding in rural Mount Vernon, Ohio. -John Also Bennett, December 2012

"That's the most formal piece I ever did. It's very reductionist because I was interested in dealing with the computer and the digital imaging process on its own terms. The only analog image is a voltage-controlled moving square created with the Rutt/Etra synthesizer. I used that image pattern through which to key and genlock other computer-created textures and square shapes. I was using a program called "Clear Center" where the pixel is routed from the center of the raster all the way around the rectangles in either direction at very high speed. By controlling the luminance and width of the pixel you get different kinds of textures within the square. Here, the square is articulated as an evolving architecture in time-from classical space (Greece) to outer space (Jupiter) using light energy as the building material." - B.B.
