Cinematic Era: 1982 Vintage

Film noir meets punk rock in this “pocket detective novel” by former Cinema Guild member Kellman. Music by Mike Richards.

This film was originally shot with unusual Fuji single 8mm film and developed from the maker’s experiments with unconventional projection speeds that were made possible with the Bolex “toaster” projector. By incorporating a serendipitous laboratory event, the resulting film emerged from the maker’s submission to a constructed accident. She ultimately rephotographed, enlarged and altered the small gauge footage using an optical printer.

A picture of the life of residents of a modern apartment block. Thanks to the use of the trick technique, the film shows in cross-section apartments-similar boxes, the interiors of which are inhabited by different tenants. Hundreds of events happen in the big, busy moloch house: mundane and unusual, funny and tragic. However, they are all episodes to which no significance is attached. Life goes on...

"Coastal Calls is a film which deals with primary filmic elements and produces constantly shifting relationships between them. The film is made up of four 100ft rolls/takes of slow pans of a beach and its surrounding landscape with focus and exposure in constant change. The sound is that of space (sea, wind) alternating with that of a wind instrument (Shawm). Only at specific instances do focus and exposure match to give an image that is readable in illusionistic terms, so that any attempt to 'place' oneself is subverted by the constant perceptual shift applied to the image ... never gathered into representation but only crossing points of unstabilised representation, as if by accident." - Michael Maziere, Undercut.

An idealist sculptor is inspired to carve a large relief on a cliffside, commemorating the spot where his pacifist father was executed for his beliefs and for protesting the saber-rattling of the times. The sculptor's inspiration was his visit to New York to see Picasso's famous "Guernica," portraying the inhumanity and horrors of war, a painting that was subsequently returned to Spain. When a young woman watches an interview with the sculptor on television, she is motivated to pay him a visit and the two strike up a relationship. He loans her his apartment in Budapest, though he refuses to sleep with her. Meanwhile, her lover becomes jealous of the sculptor and goes to visit him himself, upon which the two immediately clash because their views on life and politics are so different. Margit has been away to track down the painting of Guernica so as to understand what has inspired her sculptor friend, and when she comes back, she decides to marry her lover.

Kiesel, in Incendio Italiano (roughly, Italian Conflagration) takes the metaphor of highway travel as the central axis for an exploration of poetic sensibility in the grand tradition of Goethe's Italian journeys and Thomas Mann's Death in Venice.

This film was directed by Hiroyuki Yanase, who also directed Obsessed with Champon. Although its theme and story differ completely from his previous work, presenting a serious romantic drama, it remains infused with the director’s characteristically relaxed and easygoing style. The result is a distinctly 1980s atmosphere light, mellow, and refreshingly unconventional. The film is particularly notable for Kinoshita’s graceful camerawork and Mōri’s outstanding title and credit design.

THE DAILY LIFE IN NUBIAN VILLAGE

The concert was filmed on June 4th, 1982 at Sartory Säle in Cologne (Germany) during the 82' COLLISION DRIVE tour. In 1981 Alan Vega had released his second solo LP under the title Collison Drive.

For 100 years it was polluting the environment - now it is closed. What has happened to the former workers? Have they been made redundant? Will the site of the old works be taken over by a new one, or will a park be laid out there for the local inhabitants?
