Artist Cindy Sherman first came to widespread attention in the early 1980s with evocative photographs that simulated film stills. Posing as "B" movie characters, she cast herself as director, producer and protagonist, masquerading as a startling range of female identities. The stylized scenarios of these photographs were the inspiration for the staged talk-show interview format adopted here by MICA-TV, in which Carole Ann Klonarides plays the role of a quasi-talk show host/art dealer handling Sherman's photographs. As they talk, Sherman metamorphoses into the different characters that she assumes for her photos. The cinematic backgrounds are created — as in her photographs — with rear-screen slide projection, a device that conveys the visual and conceptual themes of Sherman's early work. Muzak film scores accompany the transitions.

Back around 1981, a decade before MTV Unplugged came along, Dave Mason did this 50-minute show at Perkins Palace, playing acoustic guitar and backed by guitarist/violinist Jim Krueger. It was released on laserdisc by Pioneer Artists in the mid-'80s and became a favorite of fans who were equipped to play the software, but the 2002 CD release is the first chance that most of his audience will have to enjoy the performance. Mason does a nice, relaxed, informal set consisting of most of the songs for which he is best known -- "We Just Disagree," "Feelin' Alright," "All Along the Watchtower," "Bring It on Home to Me," "Take It to the Limit," and "Let It Go, Let It Flow" -- the latter beautifully showcasing Mason and Krueger's voices as well as their playing.

This documentary, directed by Jacques Renard in 1981, retraces seventy years of life in the mines through the testimonies of miners from the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coalfield. Confronted with numerous archival documents, the protagonists tell their stories and reflect on their past and present history. These four episodes (The Mine, The Memory, The Heart and The Body) shed light on the beginnings of coalmining, its working conditions, social and political struggles, the different technical evolutions of the miners’ work and the decline of the sector. Mémoires de la mine is unique in the history of French television documentaries because of its scope: never before have such life and career stories been recorded. Mémoires de la mine won the Prix de la critique and the Prix de la Société des Gens de Lettres.

An old man who used to be a projectionist, a cassette deck that comforts his solitary life, a nude photo of a woman who used to be a mobo (modern boy) and his girlfriend. These are the reality of Narita's performance. He brutally cuts them out and composes the film based on his own theme. It is the sincerity of the cold, detached, painstaking images of his wrinkled, toothless mouth that make him seem so present, even though he has lost his job. Without using any dialogue, the director Nagasaki poetically condenses what he encounters in the small room, which is interesting because it allows us to discover something that we had not noticed in our daily lives.

The nine-year-old Sinti girl Brigitta shows us her world. She lives with her family in a caravan site on the outskirts of a small Bavarian town. Everybody still speaks Romani and continues to live by the customs handed down. That means that the children take part in adult life and that the very highly respected parents describe how it used to be. In this community, all age groups live together naturally. For these Sinti, `gypsy' is an insult. At school they are taught there are two cultures, two languages and two realities: that of the Sinti and that of the Germans. While German is spoken at school, the only pupils are Sinti children. Brigitta animatedly describes the material deprivations, which are mollified by the life as `one big family'. Brigitta knows all too well where she belongs.

Two thousand fishermen, living in a 50-kilometer stretch of the coast of Rio de Janeiro, between Macaé and Cabo Frio, are threatened with paralyzing their activities. An anhydrous alcohol production plant, located on the banks of the São João River, is causing water pollution, with the indiscriminate release of "vinhoto", a by-product of sugar cane. It prevents the penetration of sunlight into rivers and compromises their oxygenation. Pollution, carried by the current, is already reaching the sea waters. Fishermen, scientists and technicians denounce the plant's procedure, which puts the health of the region's inhabitants and the traditional fishing economy at risk."

Hryhoriy Porytsky, also known as Greg, was one of the central figures in the Lviv hippie movement in the 1970s. Together with other freedom-loving young people, he was a member of a non-conformist association called the Holy Garden Republic, which met in an abandoned garden of the Discalced Carmelites monastery in the centre of Lviv. The film shows the participants of the Republic, their apartment parties, walks, talks, and, basically, their lives.

Small Foveal Fields, a continuation of my work with abstract filmic imagery, is primarily concerned with the mystery and elemental poetry of visual perception. Structurally, this film consists of ten separate-but- related episodes in which kinetic atmospheric light emerges from darkness, creates and activates color images and color space, then fades into black. Each of these ten mobile color fields interacts with a static grid system of white dots which provides a geometric reference and counterpoint to the film’s amorphic evolution
