At the beginning of the film, we are presented with an ordinary story. It is the story of a student organization's internal struggle. The story begins with the protagonist taking a briefcase and the organization taking it back, along with his woman. The man who brings back the bag faces the woman. The room is somehow symmetrical. This 1980 Arena documentary profiles writer and performer Victoria Wood and teenage playwright Andrea Dunbar. Wood is seen, alongside Julie Walters, during rehearsals for Wood's stage play Good Fun at the Sheffield Crucible and the film explores her talent to amuse through her witty and engaging songs. The film also looks at Dunbar, as her first play, The Arbor, written when she was only 15, was running at the Royal Court.

Vera, wife of the plumber Simandl (Josef Somr), is found murdered in the cinema next to the IDOC (Information and Documentation) agency where she worked. Marha's primary suspects are the three men working at the agency: deputy editor-in-chief Brandl (Jirí Pleskot) and editors Pernata (Eduard Cupák) and Remes (Ludek Munzar, and of course also Simandl.

Martina and Jürgen are lovers in the GDR. She is studying economics in Leipzig, he is preparing for his master's examination as a violin maker in Altneukirchen in Vogtland.
