How do we perceive the people we see for the first time, upon what do we base our opinions? “Metamorphosis” continues to explore the subject of social alienation in cities and biased perceptions of strangers because of their looks. Precise experiments uncover dangerous social stereotypes which are still following us.

I cut out a rectangular portion of a photograph to create a peephole, equivalent to a camera viewfinder. The cut-out photograph is a sequence of photographs that show a hand pointing at the peephole. I repeatedly overlaid the sequence of peephole photographs onto a photograph of a corner of a room, creating an image in which the window looking into a part moves within the whole.

"I feel a particular excitement while viewing this film. It seems to be a way into the workings of the memory banks of the mind as well as an opening of a person's heart. The film suggests itself as an aesthetic of memory." –Ken Ross, "In the Eye of the Child," Downtown Review, Winter, 1980

"This film is the story of T. D. Lingo, who for 20 years has lived on his own mountaintop in the Colorado Rockies. During this time, Lingo has been conducting research into the human brain. He has a unique theory about the brain's mechanisms and how to develop their potential. Each summer, students from around the country come to Lingo's mountain to commune with nature, enjoy nude bathing and encounter groups, and to study his unusual and unique theories. "

Return of a prodigal daughter. An angry film in which the filmmaker tries to come to grips with the distance between her and her parents. Cinema-verité footage that depicts a complacent and impenetrable suburban existence is overlaid with an interior monologue that stamps the film with her presence and peculiar point of view. Ann Schaetzel won First Prize at the Ann Arbor 8mm Film Festival in 1979 for her film, Pat's Tow.

This film documents the activities of the Stars Group, an underground collective of artists who pursued freedom of expression in China in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Huang Rui, Ma Desheng, and Wang Keping were key figures in the collective. The film begins with the group’s 1979 exhibition outside the National Art Museum of China in Beijing and records its closure by the authorities, the street demonstrations to protest the closure, negotiations with the authorities, and the subsequent exhibition at Beihai Park. The work is the only known video that records these significant moments, and it also offers insight into life in Beijing after the end of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). Held at M+ Museum in Hong Kong.

"Music For Voices" was produced in a handmade process, by chemically soaking and staining unspooled strands of 16mm raw-stock. The film was subsequently made into a projection print without ever being run through a camera or subject to a final processing procedure. The resulting visual cascade of this cameraless film functions as the "music" of the title, accompanying spoken words of artist-performer Tony Billoni in an audio recording of him made circa 1984.

At the documentary film seminar given by Gisela Tuchtenhagen at the dffb in 1979, three documentary portraits of women were made that were combined under the title “Küche, Theater, Krankenhaus” (Kitchen, Theatre, Krankenhaus). Students Lilly Grote, Irina Hoppe and Christine Domkowski took turns at doing the camerawork, sound and editing, supported by film editing lecturer Heide Breitel. [...] In Meine Freundin Helma, Irina Hoppe accompanies actress and theatre director Helma Fehrmann at rehearsals and in her private life. Lilly Grote’s film Beobachtungen auf Station 33 was made at the Urban-Krankenhaus hospital in Kreuzberg and doesn’t follow an individual person but rather the patients and nurses there during their everyday work. On the waterfront, a few soldiers inspect the perimeter where a festive table has been set up in front of a makeshift wooden stage. The garrison commander greets a motley group of foreign visitors as the waiters open the champagne to start the show. The perspectives alternate, the bah-humbug atmosphere at the guests' table is counterpointed by the reluctance of the performers and the resentment of those who prepare the meal and must serve the guests. From this group, the character played by Marga Barbu stands out for her eccentric, disruptive presence, upsetting the fragile balance of the whole performance and aggravating the already tense situation towards its dramatic climax.

In the fall of 1939, more than 600 fishermen and fish handlers in the tiny town of Lockeport, Nova Scotia walked the picket line in front of the town's only employers, Swim Brothers and the Lockeport Company. Both fishplants had locked their doors rather than recognize the Canadian Fishermen's Union as official bargaining agent. For eight weeks, as autumn turned to winter, the men, with their wives and families, held firm. It was a bread-and-butter struggle that made national headlines--one of the first major attempts by Nova Scotia fishermen and fishhandlers to win union recognition, and one of the first major tests of the N.S. Trade Union Act, passed in 1937.
